Someone would prompt, "write a Nike ad," get crap results, and post the evidence as if that was the end of the story. Contempt prior to investigation. While many #designers were doing mind-blowing things with images, #writers were just... #writing it off. I've always felt that Generative AI is like a tsunami wave slowly rolling towards us as we're surfing. Sure, we can sit on our surfboards, yelling at it. Telling this force of nature about our thoughts and feelings and opinions. That's an option. Or, we can turn and start paddling like our lives depend on it. So, that's what I did with my friend and colleague Carl Nolting. To say we're constantly impressed with the results would be an understatement. We hope you enjoy our latest installment. Microsoft’s new tool for generating talking faces of virtual characters is very impressive. VASA-1 (which stands for visual affective skills) is very life-like, taking a #generativeai image of a person from DALL-E 3 and turning it into a video with movements synchronized across audio, facial nuances and natural head motion. Remember when AI was just a cool concept in sci-fi movies? These physical objects being “crushed” does not define your creativity or your future as an artist, designer, or musician… Well, here we go again with a large portion of the creative community up in arms about a recent Apple ad for the new iPad. I’ve been hearing responses to a recent post on X like… — “Apple's image is built on connections with creative professionals. Those people have an intimate attachment to the tools of their craft. Symbols of meaning and fulfillment. Making an ad with this destruction is unprofessional and offensive on a different level.:)” Or… “I'm a designer. I had tons of crappy clients and this commercial is just plain sad. You must read the room of what's going on in the world right now. I get the message of "all in one" but using the crunch (or pressed) wasn't a nice approach. Destroying instruments where a lot of musicians appreciate is kinda sentimental. The musicians play their instruments because they feel joy and is the only thing they can afford. There is a crisis where we cannot buy the basics such food so probably won't have the $ to buy iPad. It's just tone deaf. Maybe 10+ years ago would've been another way to interpret but right now, 2024, nah. People are desperate and watching these commercials where they are pushing consumers to spend more on technology which are going to replace all art and creativity in a small device... not cool.” — Take things as you may, but… I find the symbolism of “destruction” to have been taken far too literally and rather perceive the visual concept of the ad to be about “compression and integration” through the process of “pressing and forming” so many creative tools into a single product. If this same visual concept were for an iPhone and the items being “crushed” were a fax machine, telephone, radio, keyboard, scanner, Rolodex, modem, monitor, encyclopedia, books, albums, etc. Would everyone have the same reaction? I don’t feel an iPad or any product will ever “replace all art and creativity”, but rather as a tool that may perhaps introduce more people to it. Technology will never stop for anything, and neither will human creativity.

So much for their marketing nonsense of "ethical AI" As I've said since the beginning, there is nothing ethical about how Adobe handles its AI. Their AI is trained on Adobe stock, which they do not own. They didn't ask the content owners before they trained their AI. Their TOS does give them the right to do anything they want with the content on their market. Legal, yes. Ethical? “ethical” is code for “commercially safe”. This #branding case study by Smith & Diction for AI-powered "answer engine", Perplexity is so incredibly elegant and gorgeous. Their thinking for the evolution/animation of the symbol — from blinking cursor line... to asterisk... to a dimensional "open book" star icon is so clever and satisfying. And I particularly love the decision to shoot the photography from odd angles and perspectives as a way to communicate the idea that Perplexity has a very different "perspective" for search. With the Bay Area absolutely scorching under this crazy "heat wave," I was inspired to give my "We Scream for Ice Cream" 2D illustrations an incredibly realistic, drippy melting effect in 3D! As someone who's been a diehard 2D artist forever, seeing my finished artwork pop off the screen in 3D for the first time was like experiencing those jaw-dropping images from the James Webb Space Telescope – a whole new mind-blowing dimension to dive into! But after really immersing myself in this 3D world, I realized something profound: 2D has its own electrifying magic that even 3D can't quite capture. I've come to the thrilling conclusion that it's my personal, signature style that steals the show, whether in 2D or 3D: the way I boldly scratch those lines, the funky shapes I cook up, how I wildly exaggerate those events – that's the real sorcery, with the actual medium playing second fiddle! So hey, what's your take? Do those bangin' 2D illustrations just nail the vibe better than the 3D versions? I'm thinking of turning these wacky characters into actual figurines for my niece. Now asking the experts what’s the slickest workflow to make that fantasy a reality?

Great post and article Rodd Chant ®© couldn't agree more: ‘The agencies that erase the more senior talent from their spreadsheets are setting themselves up for failure. They are also creating more new competitors. Many senior talent who were either laid off or left due to dissatisfaction with the agency system are setting up micro-agencies, offering clients more hands-on direct contact with senior people who are creating the work and who have enough experience to work one-to-one with clients. ‘ We are all faced with the situation: More time, hands-on using the expertise we have gathered working closer with clients = Greater relevance and better creative solutions doing what we love! 👏

Iron Man 2 was the 1st film I worked on. A request for an animated loop became 100+ vfx shots(!). A pivotal moment for myself and my former team at Perception— here's how we pulled it off: (part of a series of posts ahead of a career milestone reflecting on formative past experiences... more on that soon) Studio owners always ask me how you land a client like Marvel... there's no cheat code— it just came down Danny Gonzales & Jeremy Lasky hustling hard to stay on Marvel's radar for YEARS. After all that work, we eventually got offered a sort of vfx 'scrap'. Thrilled to be in the door, you do anything you can to pry the door wider & wider. While on a call about a background element (our only task) I heard someone in the bkgrd say "Tony's glass phone" and my eyes widened... Over a weekend, armed with Glass cut from Home Depot, my team & I designed and animated a test. We made it look like someone was using a glass phone, holographic UI & all, as if it was a finished product. This was the era of the OG iPhone, and it was thrilling to apply my design & animation skills to interaction concepts & UI features. We sent the test, and after months of silence... we got the call. We were in! As newbies, we had to overhaul approach and processes. 32-bit color & LUTs (uncommon in '09), new hardware, & security protocols that drastically changed collaboration. With regular reviews with Jon Favreau & VFX Sup Janek Sirrs, we earned more trust and got more shots, ultimately designing Tony's personal gadgets, and more. The morning of release, I sent emails to tech blogs (some of the highest trafficked websites in '10), and the next morning we had headline stories in them all. Our work debuted in front of filmgoers, and the tech industry at large. A proud moment for my team & I— especially John Koltai, Bowe King, & Brett Bailey. Seeing our work 50ft tall! Names in the credits! It was epic, and only just the beginning... Iron Man 2 was the first of 24 films and 8 streaming series I worked on with Marvel Studios. But it also had calls coming in from the major tech brands. All with a similar question: How do we make our tech more like Tony's? I'm deeply thankful to my colleagues & collaborators on these projects— each project is really f'ing hard. And always thankful to the team at Marvel Studios— the ultimate cheat-code is to be associated with characters and stories that fans absolutely adore.

I'm continuing my experiment with this second try on the newest AI Video Generation tool from Krea.ai • Video generation, up to 10 seconds • Keyframing sequence (you select your image and Krea makes the interpolation) • Direct prompt gen OR images upload • Morphing system 😄 PRO: there are really good vibes with this morphing effect 🤔 CON: At the moment, the interpretation of the original images when you use an upload is...somewhat approximate. (raw image from MJ in first comment) 💡 Possibility to test it with free account (around 3mn of free generation by day) > I can confirm you it's really short 🚨 If you want to try it more thoroughly, premium account is mandatory as the free credits run out very quickly 💰

A takeaway from Adobe's AI/Terms of Service controversy: Creatives are, understandably so, on high alert when it comes to product/software changes around AI. Not only to protect our original work and IP but guarding the privacy of our clients and upholding NDA's. Many creatives I know have questions about AI, are vigilant about vetting any changes, and significant news spreads like wildfire. Although many of us use AI tools in our day-to-day or are overall optimistic (myself included), there is still a lot of unease and uncertainty in the community. Communicating changes clearly, in plain English (we're not lawyers), and making clear what it is and is not when making these updates is critical. #ai #creativeleadership
