What are the most innovative ways to give back?
I cannot express how important board development is for the nonprofit sector! As a career professional in the nonprofit sector, a well educated, mission focused board is critical to a nonprofit's survival. Too often boards consist of great volunteers and leaders in the for-profit and government sectors, but have very little nonprofit leadership knowledge. At the end of the day, we are held accountable to ethical stewardship of donor dollars - but ultimately it is the federal government that grants, or revokes, our tax-exempt status. Therefore, while status in the community is valuable - knowledge of nonprofit management is even more so.

How can you provide feedback that is both supportive and challenging?
Feedback is empowering. It is the opportunity to share experience and knowledge with the recipient to broaden their thinking and approach to a situation. In turn, they benefit by developing their own ideas and solutions for improvement. It is an ongoing process.
