  • BIM is Not an Option: BIM Planning is Project Planning

    AGCMO Design and Technology Conference

A well-defined BIM Execution Plan (BEP) is critical to the success of a project in today’s market, yet it is often overlooked. What typically happens with a BIM Execution Plan? A well-defined BIM Execution Plan (BEP) is critical to the success of a project in today’s market, yet it is often overlooked. What typically happens with a BIM Execution Plan? Parties critical to the project, representing all of the involved disciplines, sit down together early, either before or at the start of a project, and determine the scope of work for BIM on a project. Scope of work can span from the design to the operations phases, evaluating how BIM will be used during each project phase. Deliverables are agreed upon, levels of detail are determined for different phases of the project, and the project team members are identified very early in the process so that they may accomplish their scope of work with a minimum disruption to the project schedule.

When implemented well, the BEP becomes a working, living document that is a solid reference for process and deliverables throughout the project and provides all project team members with a metric by which to measure. When not implemented well (if at all), the BEP might be looked at once and then never used again, at which point the team members go off in their own directions on the various processes, developing procedures that may not respect the overall impact to the project. After much experience implementing BIM on both the design and construction sides of the trade, it became apparent that BIM Execution Plans should be treated as project planning. When the BEP is used as a project management tool (not just a BIM tool), it becomes valuable to the whole project team. BIM Planning is Project Planning and the goal of this panel discussion among peers with years of experience in BIM/Project Planning is to address the topics above so that the industry may learn from our experiences.

  • Dynamo: The Basics

    Midwest University

This class will discuss which process would be a good candidate for Dynamo and where you will spend more time creating a Dynamo graph than manually creating it yourself. Next, the session will step into the actual program, start to learn about data structure, the importance of that data structure, and what can be done with that data. Finally, the session will conclude putting Dynamo to work and creating some basic Revit geometry, automatically.

  • Automated Enterprise Model Health Using Dynamo Sandbox and Revit to Inform Training Needs

As BIM Managers and Captains, we need to be informed of under-performing models and use those insights to provide more/ better training, either on one project or throughout an entire company. An automated process of gaining this insight across all our projects will identify problems on a larger scale.

The Outlet Collection at Elk Grove planned to be a new location for rest, shopping, relaxation, and entertainment in Elk Grove, California. All of the structural steel had been erected and concrete slabs poured. Then the economy in the United States in 2007-2008 made this plan difficult to complete and construction was halted in 2008.

In 2014, the client approached The Beck Group to finish design of the complex and finish the job. Through discussions with the Virtual Building Group, Beck’s Design team requested VBG to Laser Scan the existing structure and complete the as-built model to start the design process of the 312,000 sq. ft. campus. VBG began in the summer of 2014 with a two-man team spending 11 days on-site capture existing structural steel members, roofing joists, interior and exterior stud walls, existing roof, and edges of slab for coordination. VBG continued through late 2014 spending six weeks modeling of the existing construction for the Design team to start the design process.
