IF YOUR SIGNS BEGIN TO FADE AFTER 19 YEARS, IS THAT A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT? I originally thought that this was a joke! We recently received an email from a customer wanting us to warranty signs we had manufactured 19 years ago, because they were beginning to fade! We manufactured the signs in question in 2005. Signs lasting 19 years is amazing! I really thought this was a joke, but it wasn’t. Apparently, our customer was under the impression that our signs would never fade! Unfortunately, that is not the case! As the wise Joe Kinda always said, “Nothing Lasts Forever, Not Even Us!”. There was a time when inks and paints could resist fading for many years, but not anymore. This was back in the days when the inks were solvent-based inks, not water-based inks, as they are today! These old inks took days to dry, on drying racks! It looked like a bakery, in the shop area. There were rows and rows of drying racks, filled with signs just waiting to dry, in the air. It took a lot more time to complete a sign than it does today! Then along came new government regulations that took away solvent-based inks and paints and replaced them with the new water-based substitutes. You can see the results of this change in automobile paints today. Car paint tends to fade and peel after four or five years! New car paint just does not last anymore! Needless to say, these new regulations have changed the printing industry. We were left to figure out new ways to get longer life out of these new products. Although, we are using the highest quality inks available, the ink manufactures will only warranty their inks for 3 years, against fading. To combat these potential fading issues, we had to come up with other ways to add UV protection to our signs. We now use high quality UV inks that cure with UV light instead of air drying. These inks resist fading better than conventional inks! We also add Mylar lamination to all of our aluminum signs. The Mylar is applied over the printed sign. It is a polyester (clear plastic) film that provides years of additional UV and scratch protection. The Mylar lamination gives our signs a smooth glossy finish. With our Mylar lamination, you get many additional years out of our signs. If you are in harsher conditions like Arizona, New Mexico, Texas or even Canada, we have our Tuf-Cote option. This is an aerospace material that provides even longer UV protection. It does cost a little more, but extends the life of your sign for years longer than even the Mylar. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever. However, we do use the highest quality materials, inks and UV protecting laminations available. Our signs outlast our competition. 🌡️ 🏠 #PsychrometricFriday You MUST maintain indoor building #surface #temperatures above the space ambient air dew-point temperature, otherwise condensation can result💧💧 🔸I’ve used this #ASHRAE formula in the past to give me a “ballpark” idea of what that indoor surface temperature might be. Sure, there is modeling software that’s much more accurate, but this has served me well in the field (aka; it has hasn’t gotten me into trouble). 🪟 Since windows are a major contributor to condensation in cold wintertime environments we might start by looking at them first. 🔹Using this formula and R Value for double pain glass, a building that is maintained at 75°F (23.9C) indoors on a 0°F (-17.7C) winter day might have an interior glass surface temperature of approximately 45°F (7.2C). This means the indoor relative humidity can theoretically go as high as 35% before I’d begin begin seeing water dripping from the surface of the windows glass. 🔹In the real world, I probably wouldn’t mechanically humidity this buildings much above 30% RH (41.5F DPT) (5.2C DPT), for fear of unseen moisture condensation elsewhere. 🔹I might use an outdoor reset type humidistat, which would automatically adjust the humidifier to increase indoor relative humidity from a minimum of 20% RH, to a maximum around 40% RH, depending on what the outdoor temperature is. ☀️ I can use this same methodology in summer months to help determine indoor building surface temperatures, along with their potential for the adsorption or condensation of high dew-point (humid) moisture from the indoor air ☀️ ✅ What’s your indoor relative humidity of choice (or default) this winter, and (how) are you keeping your window’s dry❓ #engineering #engineers #davidschurk #mechanicalengineering #mechnicalengineers

Productive Monday morning. ✅ It was a great morning visiting a customer at one of our hometown manufacturing facilities in Erie. Mesa and I are gearing up (literally, check out that PPE!) for two weeks filled with on-site visits at new and existing customer facilities. 👷🏼‍♀️ June is National Safety Month, so I wanted to highlight a few things I keep in mind as I travel from facility to facility. Nobody talks about this, but when you're in the environment every day, it's easy to become complacent. A few things I ALWAYS remind myself before going on-site are to: Wear Proper PPE - Every facility requires different levels of PPE. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the requirements and always have your hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, high-vis vests, and steel-toed boots on hand. 🥾👓 Follow Facility Protocols - Every facility has its own set of safety rules and procedures. Take the time to understand them! 💭👂🏼 Stay Aware of Your Surroundings - Be mindful of moving machinery and follow all facility safety signs and walkway designations. 👀🛑 Stay Hydrated and Rested - Long days on-site can be tiring.
