Profession and organizational accountability, quality, safety, clinical practice, recruitment, retention, workforce development, patient and staff experience, change agency, strategic planning, efficiency, interprofessional collaboration, innovation… you recognize these as just a few of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership #AONL nurse executive competencies. Nurse executives come from many different specialty backgrounds. No matter the job title, nurse leaders across the board are performing some nursing professional development (NPD) aspects in their role regularly. With the full scope and depth of NPD competencies on board, NPD leaders are key partners to the nurse executive and are uniquely suited for nurse executive roles. Most residents admitted to LTC or rehabilitation setting experience difficult emotional and/or behavioral symptoms at some point during their admission. If we take a minute to put ourselves in the shoes of a persons admitted to a LTC or rehabilitation facility, we quickly appreciate the emotional challenges they face. OSAOHN promoted Occupational Health Nursing and practice at the Oregon Center for Nursing's first Nurse Practice Transitions conference held at Peace Health in Eugene April 2024. The new poster designed by OSAOHN Board member Chad Porch, attracted the attention of many attendees, one of whom was Deb Fell Carson (left), long time OSAOHN member who is now with the Faith Community Nursing Network. The conference covered many topics related to the challenge of training and retaining nursing talent. Improving pay for nurse educators and finding preceptors for trainees. Developing practice standards for seasoned nurses moving into community-based roles. New student education methods and tools. From "textbooks" to online content, to "You Tube" videos and VR tools that teach anatomy or prepare a student for their first clinical encounter were all discussed. Nurse educators expressed an interest in having students get a chance to shadow an OHN to become aware of our specialty. And a number of sessions addressed topics long in the lexicon of Occupational Health and Safety practice: Workplace culture of respect and civility, an end to tolerance of violence - verbal or physical - whether from patients, visitors or other staff. OHNs will have much to offer the healthcare workplace and much to share with nurses in many fields as the profession and healthcare industry begins to adopt for itself what we have preached for others: Total Worker Health. #occupationalhealthnursing #nursing #workplacehealthandsafety #Totalworkerhealth

Long Term Care accreditation takes the bite out of state surveys. The accreditation part has a consultative and a regulatory facet to the process. The consultative process gives the administration a "heads-up" to potentially serious problems down the road. Known as "Type I" and Type II" substantiations, Type I areas are early warning implications which usually can be resolved before it becomes a regulatory deficiency. Accreditation is well worth the investment, rather than paying fines and penalties, and increases residents' quality of care.

Of the 7,600 nurses who purchased fake diplomas from three Florida nursing programs last year, almost a third passed the NCLEX. The NCLEX is designed to allow individuals with minimum educational requirements to sit for the exam. Currently, an Associate's degree in Nursing is sufficient to pass the exam and become a registered nurse. However, the initiative to elevate the majority of the nursing workforce to Bachelor's degrees by 2020 has not materialized, primarily due to a lack of financial incentives. Nurses with BSN degrees are compensated just as much as those with ADNs, as nursing unions advocate for equal pay regardless of educational level, emphasizing that seniority is what matters most.Meanwhile, nursing curricula have fallen so far behind actual skills-based nursing that the new generation of nurses expects mandatory on-the-job training. Their understanding of healthcare operations is nearly nonexistent. The 'Future of Nursing' report published in 2021 highlighted equity as the most important initiative for nurses this decade. Therefore, the older generation still benefits from skilled and experienced nurses trained in traditional methods. It's the millennials we should worry about—they will likely face a shortage of proper nursing care. The majority of them already struggle with poor mental health, suffer from chronic and perceived disabilities, and lack the financial means to afford healthcare.The NCLOX still focuses on long-term skilled nursing rather than future needs. The curriculum is 30 years outdated, and there is a shortage of educators to meet the current demands.To address these issues, I propose the following: 1. Eliminate ADN programs. Make the BSN the minimum degree requirement to sit for the NCLEX 2. Standardize all pre-nursing curricula and combine pre-med and pre-nurse classes so that all healthcare professionals have a strong foundational knowledge of basic human anatomy and physiology. 3. Increase the number of continuing education credits required for license renewal. 4. Introduce more STEM courses in nursing curricula, as current ADN programs do not mandate courses in statistics or any other math. 5. Allow for a competency-based curriculum that recognizes individual strengths in social sciences or STEM. Simplifying the nursing force in the name of equity ultimately harms everyone.

To put the CMS final rule re: SNF staffing ratios in context, according to the article I've linked, a "facility with 100 residents would need at least two or three RNs and at least 10 or 11 nurse aides as well as two additional nurse staff (which could be registered nurses, licensed professional nurses, or nurse aides) per shift to meet the minimum staffing standards." Doesn't sound onerous but the current reality and business model of SNF/NFs makes this a big deal. https://lnkd.in/eGtNNtr9
