You have people management skills, but you’re not in a traditional career. What are your options?
One can showcase their people management skills by managing a group of volunteers, managing a committee within a civic organization, coaching a recreational team and any other area where there's a need to manage people towards a common goal. The training, delegating, providing feedback, course correcting, and all the myriad of pieces that are involved in 'side projects' are ways to demonstrate the people management skillset and build your network.

You have people management skills, but you’re not in a traditional career. What are your options?
Mentoring others is a great way to utilize your people management skills when you're in an individual contributor role and no longer managing people. Join your company's mentoring program or other organizations where mentoring opportunities exist. Offer to mentor someone who has expressed an interest in an area in which you have experience. [Re]Connect with former direct reports, they may need a mentor, but not know of your availability or interest in mentoring beyond the prior manager/employee relationship. Colleagues may also need mentoring, so don't leave them out! Make your desire to mentor known within your various networks and communities. I enjoy being of service to others and currently mentor former direct reports & colleagues.

How can you use vocal variety to keep your audience engaged during presentations?
If you've ever heard a monotone speaker, you were probably bored and lost interest very quickly. Your voice is an instrument and like musical instruments, when it lands on the listeners ears, it will either engage or disengage them. Vocal variety will keep the listener engaged and even enthralled in your message. Your voice can deliver the message powerfully when it's raised and lowered at appropriate times that align with the content, drawing in the audience even more. And let's not forget the usefulness of pausing and being silent for a few seconds, ah silence can be golden allowing the message to sink in. Vocal variety also shows that you're confident and knowledgeable about the material being presented.

How can mentorship help new data managers succeed?
I value the mentoring relationship as I mentor, I also learn from my mentees. One thing that is of utmost importance is building trust in within the mentorship, which can only be done by being open, authentic and listening (both mentee & mentor). The mentor isn't there to solve problems, but to guide and offer suggestions. As a mentee, be open to receiving the information, as a mentor allow the mentee to be expressive and really listen to understand their goals within the mentoring relationship, ask questions to ensure understanding before offering advice. Mentees, should communicate clearly how they are progressing towards the goals as well as if there are new goals that they would like to work on. This isn't specific to DM, but in general
