Comms and policy leaders are being asked to play far larger roles as business partners supporting ever more stakeholders. So why did the industry suffer so much in 2023 after many years of growth? As an sector, we are not adapting fast enough to the needs. Organizations are desperate for help but also under tremendous financial strain. They now need both senior level counsel and advisory support as well as deep domain expertise to actually produce. By and large, our industry is still split by this chasm - between strategic and tactical. Clients cannot afford to separate these, either in time or money. Do you still need a crisis playbook? A very important question posed by my colleague Alex Lyall. The other question is: how is your company assessing communication risk and are your executives and Board aligned on what is material and what is reputationally important? Too often there is a disconnect between the board and management and that lack of alignment can hit hard in today's permacrisis environment, significantly impacting company reputation, employee productivity and the bottomline.

Does your PR team know how to explain the work we do? In too many instances, asking different members of your team how to explain public relations may bring many different answers. The obvious problem with that is that it creates confusion. As we all already know, too many people already don't get what we do. It is less about saying the exact words but more about general cohesion of the story. If your agency hasn't gone through this exercise with your team, it is something to think about.

Individuals want more than to be talked at; they want an authentic connection and two-way conversation with brands, businesses, and organizations that they support. The days of broadcasting one message to a general audience are coming to an end. Individual and authentic messaging segmented by audience is what will set brands apart from their competitors.

🥐 A little food for thought from Eleanor Hawkins. 🥐 This story illustrates both the necessity for and tension between comms and marketing. Brand reputation is critical. It takes just one misstep to cause irreparable harm (or at least significant damage) to a brand. The good news is that a healthy partnership between marketing and comms leaders, along with connection to the whole org, can impart strength and creativity within an organization.
