Americans are showing strong support for local small businesses, with consumers expressing a willingness to spend an additional $2,000 in 2024 to help their favorite shops thrive. Over 65% of Americans visit their local Main Street regularly, and the closure of these shops evokes strong emotions in nearly 75% of consumers. The pandemic has led to a newfound appreciation for local businesses, especially among suburban residents, with over 70% citing local economic contribution as a key factor in their shopping choices. Notably, younger generations such as Gen Z and millennials are particularly enthusiastic about the success of their Main Streets. Small businesses play a significant role in the U.S. economy, representing almost 44% of the GDP and employing nearly half of the nation's workforce, as reported by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 2023. Chipotle Mexican Grill - Anamoly in this economy even with continued price increases and hardly any innovation (they once showed a spicy chocolate shake in one of their documents a long long time ago). Stock is +30% YTD and +60% past year....... comps +5%, transactions +3% and avg check +2% "Chipotle has become the rare restaurant chain to report rising transactions despite higher menu prices. The company once again raised its prices in October, citing inflation. Tequila!   Many large players such as White Claw, and The Boston Beer Company (maker of Truly) are expanding their offerings and releasing tequila-flavored ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails as consumers are increasingly turning to tequila offerings in the beverage alcohol sector.   I had the opportunity to share my insights and thoughts on this surging trend with The Food Institute. In the article, I emphasized how innovations in ready-to-drink (RTD) formats, including tequila-based seltzers and margaritas, are meeting consumer demand for novel flavors. Consumer experimentation with flavor is on the rise. More than a third of US consumers are trying more flavors than last year, due to an increase in "information, innovation and opportunities...making experimentation more accessible than ever." Trying new flavors is now considered part of everyday life, with consumers actively seeking out unique taste experiences. Brick-and-mortar grocery store inspiration, social media recommendations, and customizable restaurant menus are the most common places consumers discover new flavors. It is important for CPG brands to keep up with the consumer desire for flavor novelty, and to stay on top of sustainable growth trends when planning innovations. Consumers: Spending more to buy less. The study has identified two primary ways that consumer behavior has shifted. First, consumer purchase occasions2 occurred at the same—and in some cases, at a higher—frequency than in 2022, but consumers purchased fewer items on each trip. Units per trip declined by 3 to 5 percent across the grocery, health and beauty, and household categories, outweighing the growth in frequency of purchase occasions (up by no more than 3 percent) in the same categories.3 5 potential solutions in the article could approach how to overcome this trend.

Very comprehensive and well written analysis by Scott Moses at Solomon Partners as to why C&S Wholesale Grocers is well positioned to drive success in the updated Kroger & Albertsons Companies divested store plan. Two key things Scott fails to address: First, driving customer loyalty requires much more than a robust supply chain. While it is arguably the *most* important factor (if shoppers can't find their favorite products, they will leave the store), it certainly requires other key elements to not just maintain loyalty, but *drive* loyalty. Things like loyalty programs, digital and ecomm capabilities, retail media partners, targeted customized offerings etc. - This is how you drive success and long term shopper loyalty in todays CPG landscape. Which leads me to the second area: Data Retailers and vendors have to win through data, one way shape or form. As retail media networks continue to grow across the US, along with the expansion of digital capabilities and the ever increasing complexities of the consumers path-to-purchase, data is the key to driving long term success via loyalty. That's why retailers invest millions upon millions each year in loyalty data programs and digital capabilities. And how C&S will ensure their store operating partners will be successful in this arena is really yet to be addressed. Scott makes a strong case for C&S being strong wholesale operators, highlighting their 100+ year expertise in the grocery industry and vast distribution networks and capabilities. But he leaves the door wide open for debate on whether or not C&S will actually drive success with these divested stores in todays complex consumer/retail landscape that is becoming increasingly reliant on data and digital capabilities. My curiosity (and concern) is less around whether or not C&S will be exemplary distribution partners, but whether they have the ability help these banners be successful and continue to evolve into the future of grocery. https://lnkd.in/gV4QEPzH

A double earnings/sales beat, raised guidance in many meaningful categories, and new product new news for CAVA makes for a great quarter. In fact, very few other brands--only a handful-- are doing as well. A new brand regarded as cool by guests and employees and the right kind of executive management and food has been evident for years now. The IPO seems to have supercharged attention and momentum. The discussion about the calendar adjusted SSS and traffic and the two year stacked SSS number warrants a note. While the 10Q P&L necessarily focuses on change from prior year, we are almost certainly wrong focusing on that number. We as an industry can and must spend more time on 2 year and even five year stacked numbers for better MD&A. CAVA did today. Their disclosure changed the tone. Thank you Brett Schulman.

The US Beer industry landscape is changing fast. AB InBev's North America Normalized EBIT declined by over $1.3 B from 2022 to 2023. The volume market share decline (relative to Molson Coors Beverage Company and Constellation Brands) contributed to that EBIT decline by an amount of $400 Million. It has not helped that overall volumes between these three major players has declined by over 4%. It's a general sign of the headwinds facing the beer category as shopper and consumer preferences shift. For #ABInBev, that overall market decline cost them another $200M. A just less than 4% increase in Net Pricing contributed a +ve $560Million to the Normalized EBIT change, but was insufficient to mitigate the increased inflationary unit costs associated with Cost of Sales and the de-leveraging of other SG&A operating expenses. It will be interesting to track how these components of EBIT will change for 2024, given growth constraints associated with market share gains and price increase ceilings. Looks like some drastic OPEX cuts might be the only short-term remedy for now as AB InBev looks to rebuild brand equity and volume share. In-store retail media is expected to grow significantly by 2028, with U.S. spending expected to triple to $1 billion. Leaders in the industry, including Paul Brenner from Vibenomics, a Mood Media company, Wovenmedia CEO Susie Opare-Abetia, and Grocery TV CEO Marlow Nickell, highlight the rise in interest due to the advantages of first-party data as well as the decline in traditional media reach. The Long Drink Company is on fire right now... The most recent RTD alc-bev brand to break $100m in retail sales, Long Drink has been on a growth tear since entering the US market in 2018. Jay-Z has taken notice. Marcy Venture Partners (Jay's VC firm) just announced an undisclosed but 'significant' investment in Long Drink, adding the brand to its portfolio of CPGs which now includes Partake Foods, Savage x Fenty, and Maker Wine. The Marcy investment comes on the heels of a $25m funding round in 2021 featuring several high-profile backers like actor Miles Teller, DJ Kygo, and Rickie Fowler. Quite the crew of influential investment partners. So why is everyone so bullish on Long Drink? Here's what stands out: --- 1 / Unique Product The Traditional Long Drink is a gin-based cocktail blended with grapefruit and juniper berry flavors. Gin as the alcohol base separates Long Drink from the vast majority of competitors in the RTD market which leans towards vodka, tequila, and malt. 2 / Marketing Prowess Long Drink has a fascinating history dating back to the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. The Finnish government actually commissioned the creation of the drink to satiate the millions of visitors attending the games. It was a smash hit. The brand has done an excellent job blending that nostalgic story with modern day sports marketing tactics, tapping into professional athletes like Finnish F1 driver Kimi Raikkonen and golfer Justin Thomas. 3 / Distribution Focus Now available nationwide, Long Drink started by taking a scaled approach to the US market with a focus on select markets. 2021 marked a key turning point when the brand struck a partnership with Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits, one of the top distributors in the industry. --- $100m ✅ $200m ❓ We'll see. As a betting man I'd take the under on the timeline to $200m. Regardless, what a great success story.
