“I have had the pleasure of working closely with Stefan for over 25 years, during which time he consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and expertise in his role as Director of Quality Control and company policy writer. Stefan's dedication to maintaining high standards and his meticulous attention to detail were instrumental in our organization achieving and maintaining AS9100 certification. Stefan's willingness to assist others, regardless of the complexity of the task, always stood out to me. He approached challenges with a unique ability to think outside the box, offering creative solutions that not only solved immediate issues but also contributed to long-term improvements in our processes. Beyond his technical skills, Stefan's interpersonal abilities made him a valuable colleague and leader. He fostered a collaborative environment where ideas were freely exchanged, and his guidance was instrumental in developing talent within our team. I highly recommend Stefan for his outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to excellence. Any organization would benefit greatly from his expertise, leadership, and innovative mindset.”

How can you determine if a problem has been solved in Quality Management?
After the problem has been resolved it is always important to look at the overall system and determine how much complexity was added. Frequently, solutions add complexity and if not checked can slow down processes and add unnecessary costs in the long run. Evaluate the process looking for complexities that were added from prior problem solving that are no longer needed, or complexities that could be eliminated without causing new issues. Take Tesla's Giga Casting as a good example. By reducing complexity in Assembly and multiple part manufacturing, they greatly reduced the possibilities of errors and variations coming into the process, exchanging them with a single component that has less failure modes.

How can you creatively improve your program's resilience and adaptability?
To achieve change within a program and make it resilient, people's ego need to take a back seat. There are usually one or two superman out there, who are stuck at or stuck with the current status quo. To embrace the change, these superman need to be brought into the fold, the change maybe adjusted or attributed to them, so that they become the drivers behind it. Nothing works better than making it the obstacles idea that the change is good, and they will become the biggest supporters and allow is to become resilient.

How can you improve product quality with problem solving skills?
When there is a problem that is to be solved, don't always just look at fixing the problem by identifying the root cause, I look further upstream. Are you fixing something that is really needed in the first place? Too often complexity gets added and the products quality improved, cost raised, but there is no added benefit to the customer. It is very easy to fall into this trap, everyone is happy, metrics improve, less rejections, seems like a win-win. But I always ask the question: If I improve this issue, does it provide any benefit to the end customer? Or what is more applicable in some cases: if I remove this feature, component, function from the product, will enough customers miss it to make a difference. To Improve, lets remove!

How can you determine if a problem has been solved in Quality Management?
I think one of the elements that is always overlooked is complexity. Yes, the problem goes away, metric improves. But did we add a lot of complexity to the process? Would rethinking the process reduce complexity and the changes of having other problems in the future? This should be especially considered when a process has undergone many "quality improvements". Look at Tesla's Megacasting. By reducing complexity, they are also reducing the changes of quality issues and significantly reducing cost. This should be the last step in any root-cause-corrective-action-process, as it will set you up for better solution in the future.
