Effective staffing in Sterile Processing goes beyond just knowing the number of FTEs required. It's crucial to understand where they are needed most. Today's data visualization breaks down departmental hours needed by activity. This graph depicts the "modeled" hours required to process instruments. These hours are based on the activities performed and the benchmarked or actual times to complete them. As expected, instrument assembly takes the most labor, accounting for 29% (793 hours) of the total. Delivering items follows closely in this example facility, which makes sense considering deliveries to the OR and other departments. This activity consumes 19% (519 hours) of total labor hours. Understanding both the number of FTEs needed and how their time should be allocated is essential knowledge for Sterile Processing leaders. To put the CMS final rule re: SNF staffing ratios in context, according to the article I've linked, a "facility with 100 residents would need at least two or three RNs and at least 10 or 11 nurse aides as well as two additional nurse staff (which could be registered nurses, licensed professional nurses, or nurse aides) per shift to meet the minimum staffing standards." Doesn't sound onerous but the current reality and business model of SNF/NFs makes this a big deal. https://lnkd.in/eGtNNtr9

Zero Tolerance for Miscounts: How to Level Up Your Surgical Counting 🔄 🔍 Recognizing an increase in discrepancies and a concerning retained sponge incident, Hannah Shufeldt, DNP, MSHCM, RN, CNOR, knew change was essential. She championed a collaborative effort, aligning counting practices with evidence-based guidelines. 📜 🔑 The key? Buy-in and teamwork! Understanding initial resistance, they implemented a step-by-step approach involving frontline staff and leadership. 🏥 The 4️⃣ Steps to Success: 1️⃣ Presenting the counting changes 2️⃣ Gathering team input for improvements 3️⃣ Evaluating current policy vs. proposed updates 4️⃣ Phased implementation of new counting procedures In Step 4, three significant changes were implemented to bolster their counting procedures, building upon the policy update. 📆 Over a six-month period, they gradually introduced each modification to assist the staff in adapting to one adjustment at a time. ⌛ 👍 First up, they revamped how they counted soft goods. They rolled out a new count sheet that covered not just the usual soft items but also those that tended to slip through the cracks before.📄 Next, they switched to counting instruments by tray. This meant doing a full instrument count before laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgeries. To make it easier, the team set up instrument count sheets in the hospital’s tracking system for every tray. Each sheet was stuck to its matching tray, making it easier to count instruments in groups based on their packaging.👌 ➡️ Finally, they added whiteboards to every OR, listing out the most common and retained items. This simple addition required staff to jot down these items on both the soft goods count sheet and the whiteboard, making it easier for the field team to see what was being added. The takeaway? Collaboration, and a systematic approach are crucial for driving positive change in the OR. ⚕️ ⭐ 💥 Ready to transform your OR's counting practices? ACP introduced ACPlus® Respiratory Assessment (ARA) to the speech therapy team at a skilled nursing facility’s outpatient rehabilitation program, which had already implemented OmniFlow®. Their primary goal in implementing ARA was maintaining or improving patient Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1). They found that ARA paired with OmniFlow improved patient endurance levels during exercises, reporting that 44.44% of patients assessed with ARA improved their FVC and FEV1.
