The Honors College at Azusa Pacific University invites applications for adjunct faculty to teach courses at the undergraduate level in a Humanities Great Texts program.
The Honors College telos is to liberally educate the next generation of high-achieving, academically motivated Christian leaders. The curriculum features “high-impact” practices that foster student engagement and improve learning, including a common, interconnected curriculum, a strong first-year experience, engagement with life’s big questions, rigorous writing-intensive classes, and a year-long capstone experience. The Honors College strives to produce scholarly disciples, equipped and worthy to assume positions of influence, having grown in wisdom, virtue, faith, and eloquence.
Adjunct faculty members in the Honors College are generalists who teach courses in an integrated humanities program. Each class in the program integrates philosophy, history, literature, aesthetics, writing, speaking, Bible, and theology. Candidates must be eager to work with students from a variety of academic majors, helping them grow, not simply in understanding, but in the practice of leadership, virtue, and faith.
Ideal candidates will be accomplished lecturers and discussion facilitators who offer the following:
The primary responsibility of adjunct faculty is to deliver instruction in the manner determined by the department. In addition, faculty responsibilities may include:
Assigned teaching duties will not exceed 9 units per semester; office hours and additional duties may be assigned. Total workload will not exceed 29 hours per week, nor 24 units per 12-month period.
Mental Demands
$25.32 - $27.32/hour (Using a 3 unit full semester appointment as a pay guide). The actual hourly rate will be determined by the units, course length, experience, and rank of the candidate. Adjuncts are paid on an hourly basis which includes preparation and teaching time.

- Experience in a Great Texts program either as a student or as a teacher
- A record of teaching excellence
- A passion for learning and for the humanities
- Competence in writing instruction
- An eagerness to aid the intellectual, moral, and spiritual growth of high-achieving students
- A capability to help students sharpen their capacities to think critically, listen attentively, and communicate cogently, clearly, and persuasively
- An ability to work well in a highly collaborative work environment
The primary responsibility of adjunct faculty is to deliver instruction in the manner determined by the department. In addition, faculty responsibilities may include:
- Leading small, discussion-based, intellectually stimulating colloquies
- Delivering engaging and informative lectures about Great Texts
- Participating in the collaborative preparation of syllabus and teaching of curriculum according to the goals and objectives of the department.
- Engaging in student mentoring, discipling, advising, and office hours in relation to the course load carried, and as assigned in the faculty teaching assignment.
- Participation in the Honors community, including faculty meetings and activities as well as events such as orientation and field trips
- Determine student mastery of material and assign final course grades from evaluation of papers, oral presentations, class participation, and other assignments and activities related to course material.
- Responsible for daily electronic timekeeping as it applies to the scope of this position.
- Must have a master’s or terminal degree in the field of instruction or related area.
- Proven success in teaching excellence in an undergraduate liberal arts program.
- The ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A demonstrated, vibrant Christian faith compatible with the mission of Azusa Pacific University.
- Desire and ability to integrate one’s Christian faith into the curriculum
