We are looking for an operational analyst with strong quantitative skills and a passion for supporting journalism in the public interest to work in collaboration with our content leadership team in assessing key strategic initiatives. This role supports the development of strategy and operational metrics across the content division. In this role, you will analyze our content production and help us develop key performance metrics in order to help us better understand the journalism we are producing in the aggregate and investigate opportunities to improve our ability to serve audiences across our linear broadcast and digital platforms.

The right candidate for this position will be naturally curious and enjoy working with datasets to develop actionable insights that advance our strategic goals. They will be a strong collaborator and communicator capable of working successfully with NPR’s editorial, audience insights, research and archive, product, finance and operations teams as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Reports to and supports the VP, Content Business Strategy and Operations with operational analysis, modeling, and content metric and OKR development in support of NPR’s strategic planning and day to day management of NPR’s content division.
  • Conduct a recurring audit of NPR’s journalism, developing and improving large data sets to assess content mix, production output, and performance in order to grow audiences across platforms.
  • Supports the development of operational metrics needed to support financial planning and analysis at the direction of the VP, Content Business Strategy and Operations and in support of NPR’s finance team.
  • Supports strategic ad hoc and competitive analysis to highlight KPIs, trends and opportunities to improve the content division’s ability to apply a data driven approach to business decisions.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders across our newsroom, content division, audience insights, product and revenue teams as assigned.
  • Create reports and presentations, conduct post-analysis of editorial initiatives, and share insights with stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3-5 years work experience demonstrating skills in strategic analysis.
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical, oral and written communication skills required.
  • Self-starter with the ability to manage and balance multiple projects; ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Excellent project management skills required. Must be highly organized, detail oriented and able to meet deadlines.
  • Outstanding collaboration skills, with a proven ability to work cross-functionally and gain the respect and support of internal and external partners.
  • Ability to thrive in a complex environment that requires creativity, improvisation, flexibility, change management, and a sense of humor and perspective.
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating, at all times, respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Suite with strong analytical capabilities using Excel, PowerPoint, Google sheets and Google slides.
  • Ability to learn quickly in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a news, digital media, or a digital product organization preferred
  • Understanding of and appreciation for the public broadcasting industry
  • Digital Analytics (e.g. Proven expertise with Google Analytics (or similar), GA4 preferred)

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, or business administration or a related field. An MBA degree is a plus but not required.

WORK LOCATION

Onsite: This is an on-site role based in Washington, DC; Culver City, CA; or New York City. The employee will be required to work onsite at a frequency set by their manager. There will be some flexibility to work remotely on occasion with manager approval.

Compensation

Salary Range: The U.S. based anticipated annualized salary range for this opportunity is $95,000 - $120,000 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.

Benefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. Temporary, full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPR’s benefits options. Benefits include access to health and wellness, paid time off, and financial well-being. Plan options include medical, dental, vision, life/ accidental death and dismemberment, long-term disability, short-term disability, and voluntary retirement savings to all eligible NPR employees.

$95,000—$120,000 USD
