Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Environmental Health Science program has received a research innovation award to further develop a novel method for quantifying fecal indicator bacteria in water. One student will be hired to assist in water sample collection in agriculturally-impacted areas, carrying out laboratory procedures, and documenting methods and results. The student will follow the approved protocols related to culturing, isolating, preserving, and identifying target microorganisms using traditional culturing techniques, most probable number methods, a fluorometric approach, and using a major research instrument for the identification of isolated bacteria.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be enrolled at EKU
• Senior-level academic standing
• At least one university-level course in microbiology and at least one university-level course pertaining to methods related to water quality assessment.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Student ideally would be a senior in the environmental health science program or biological or biomedical sciences program.
  
  

Job Duties

• 5% - Identification of sample sites for water sample collection - (Essential)
• 30% - Water sample and manure sample collection - (Essential)
• 40% - Performing laboratory procedures for enumerating fecal indicator bacteria - (Essential)
• 10% - Documenting results and providing weekly reports - (Essential)
• 5% - Maintaining a clean laboratory environment - (Essential)
• 5% - Performing inventory activities of needed laboratory supplies - (Essential)
• 5% - Other duties that may arise during the performance of the student employment - (Essential)
