The Data Journalist is at the forefront of merging traditional journalism with data analysis to uncover compelling stories and insights. This role involves gathering, interpreting, and visualizing complex data to produce high-quality journalistic content in an accessible manner that both informs and engages the audience. The Data Journalist collaborates closely with IT, Marketing, Communications, and Portfolio Management to identify relevant datasets, produce engaging visuals and reports, and present findings in clear and compelling narratives.

Location & Commitments
Classification: Fractional Contract
Hours: 10-15 per week to start
Location: Fully Remote anywhere in the United States
Project Scope: 6 months with potential for renewal

Essential Areas of Responsibility
Data Collection and Analysis
Collect and analyze datasets from various sources within the ministry while maintaining the highest level of confidentiality and ethical standards.
Use statistical methods and data visualization techniques to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies within the data.
Conduct investigations and fact-checking to ensure the accuracy and reliability of findings.
Story Development
Collaborate with writers and editors to develop story ideas and angles based on data-driven insights.
Translate complex data into clear, engaging narratives that resonate with a diverse audience.
Work on investigative projects to uncover newsworthy stories.
Data Visualization
Create compelling data visualizations, including charts, graphs, maps, and interactive dashboards, to enhance storytelling and facilitate audience understanding.
Utilize tools such as Tableau and ArcGIS to produce interactive and informative visuals.
Research and Reporting
Conduct thorough research to gather background information and context for data-driven stories.
Write clear, concise, and factually accurate articles, reports, and publication across various platforms, including print, digital, and multimedia.
Collaboration
Work closely with IT, Marketing, and Communication teams to brainstorm ideas, refine storytelling techniques, and ensure the integrity of data-driven journalism.
Collaborate with designers and multimedia producers to enhance storytelling through multimedia elements, such as photos, videos, and audio clips.
Impact Assessment
Evaluate the impact of data-driven stories on audience awareness, understanding, and action, and use insights to inform future projects and content strategy.

Qualifications & Experience
Minimum 5 years’ experience in data journalism or related fields.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communication, data science, or a related field. Master's degree, a plus.
Proven experience in data journalism, investigative reporting, or data analysis in a journalistic context.
Strong analytical skills and proficiency in statistical analysis and data visualization tools.
Superior written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distill complex information into compelling narratives.
Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R, a plus.
Familiarity with database management systems and data manipulation techniques.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
