About the Show

Free Media is a weekly newsletter and show brought to you by Robby Soave. The show points out mainstream media’s biggest hits and misses for the week, as well as their hottest takes. Video production happens on a weekly basis in Reason’s Washington, DC office. 

About the Role

Reason is seeking a freelance Producer to join our Free Media production team in Washington, DC. As the glue behind the operation, you will manage the full production cycle for the show. This includes generating content ideas based on the current news cycle, writing scripts, booking talent, and managing live recordings. The ideal candidate will be a well-informed news junkie with 3-5 years of experience in video and/or cable news production. Familiarity with Reason’s mission and an appreciation for the libertarian worldview is a must as well as the ability to collaborate well with others. Those with less experience are welcome to apply. This position will report to the Managing Editor, Video & Podcasts at Reason Magazine. 

Responsibilities

• Closely follow the news cycle to generate content ideas and topics
• Ensure topics are relevant and engaging and can be understood by Reason’s audience
• Scriptwriting
• Booking guests
• Managing live recordings including sometimes operating a camera and setting up lights
• Provide creative direction during filming

Qualifications

• 3-5 years of experience in video and/or cable news production, TV broadcasting, or an equivalent field
• A solid grasp of what’s going on in mainstream media 
• Experience working with talent and booking guests 
• Confidence in operating a camera and lighting equipment
• Ability to collaborate and communicate well with others
• Strong time management and organizational skills
• An understanding of Reason’s mission, and an appreciation for the libertarian worldview
• Experience with video editing software, Adobe Premiere, is a plus
