GSE Senior Affordable Underwriter (Multifamily) - Remote | WFH

Merchants Capital, a leading financing provider for multifamily housing nationwide, is seeking a Senior GSE Affordable Underwriter to join our dynamic team. With over 30 years of success and a commitment to putting people first, we offer custom financing solutions through partnerships with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, HUD/FHA, and our bank's balance sheet products.

Job Responsibilities

  • Independently underwrite multifamily mortgage loan transactions for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, ensuring compliance with Agency and Bank guidelines.
  • Review customer data, make sound credit decisions, and document transactions according to secondary market guidelines.
  • Manage client relationships in collaboration with Production, proactively addressing potential issues to ensure timely execution.
  • Evaluate proposed Agency loans for credit risk and obtain necessary approvals from Merchants' credit committee and respective Agencies.

Key Duties

  • Underwrite multifamily Agency loans, managing the process from origination to closing.
  • Stay current with Agency loan requirements and updates, ensuring compliance.
  • Conduct site inspections and evaluate third-party reports (e.g., appraisals, engineering, environmental) and vendor performance.
  • Coordinate effectively with internal teams, external stakeholders, and borrowers to facilitate successful transactions.
  • Analyze financial statements, credit reports, and other documentation to assess credit risks and provide solutions.
  • Prepare comprehensive loan packages for evaluation and approval by Merchants Credit Committee and Agency Lenders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Real Estate, or related field.
  • Minimum three years of multifamily loan underwriting experience with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, preferably in affordable products.
  • Strong understanding of Agency lending guidelines and pricing standards to minimize credit risk.
  • Familiarity with various organizational structures (LLCs, LPs, Corporations, Trusts) is preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, research, and presentation skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively under tight deadlines.
  • Proactive team player with a commitment to excellence and mentoring junior staff.
