KPBS Broadcast Engineer

The salary range for this position is $5,373.33 - $7,916.67 per month ($64,479.96 - $95,000 per year) depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.

KPBS produces and distributes educational, cultural and informational public television, radio and web programming for the benefit of the San Diego community. KPBS TV/FM and KPBS.ORG also produce programs for regional and national distribution and engage in a number of related, non-broadcast, telecommunications activities.

The Operations and Technology Division of KPBS is responsible for the building and technical facilities of the station(s) used in electronic media production, recording and transmission. The Department also lends occasional technical support to other San Diego State University areas as required

The position of Broadcast Engineer will be part of a departmental team responsible for maintaining audio/video broadcasting, datacasting, and computer equipment used in the origination and reception of radio and television signals, and to insure that the transmissions with all associated ancillary data adhere to applicable Federal Communication Commission regulations, industry standards and guidelines.

The incumbent reports to the KPBS Senior Engineering Manager but must also be able to work independently and to exercise personal initiative in the performance of specified duties. At times, this position will require working odd hours due to the nature of KPBS broadcast operations. May require driving station owned vehicles. Position may require lifting and transporting heavy equipment, material and supplies.

  • Installs, operates, and maintains technical equipment throughout the KPBS facilities as required. 70%
  • Responds to plant emergencies resulting from equipment or facility failures. 10%
  • Maintains detailed inventory and repair records. 1%
  • Makes purchase recommendations for equipment, components and supplies. 4%
  • Maintains accurate communication with Supervisors and co-workers to exchange information, concerns, receive assignments and collaborate on projects. 10%
  • Other Duties and Responsibilities as assigned 5%


Minimum Education

  • Associates level college degree in a related field or a combination of technical training and experience


Minimum Experience

  • Three years of radio and/or television engineering experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • SBE certification is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of computer networks and systems used in broadcasting
  • Knowledge of AutoCad software
  • Knowledge of RF transmission systems

  • Candidates must reside in California, or be willing to relocate, and live within a commutable distance to the SDSU campus at the time of hire.
