The Section on Translational Biophotonics (https://science.nichd.nih.gov/confluence/display/safb/Home), led by Dr. Amir Gandjbakhche at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to projects validating and analyzing maternal and fetal health and prevalent human diseases. The selected candidate will be responsible for analyzing data obtained from biosamples/patients using optical imaging systems/devices, conducting and analyzing experiments, overseeing a team of undergraduate research assistants, and contributing to scientific papers and presentations. The ideal candidate should showcase the ability to work independently within a team environment.


Role Description

This is a full-time role for a Postdoctoral Researcher at the National Institutes of Health. The Postdoctoral Researcher will be responsible for conducting laboratory experiments, analyzing data, and contributing to ongoing research projects. Additionally, the Postdoctoral Researcher may be involved in teaching and mentoring undergraduate or graduate students. This is an on-site role located in Bethesda, MD.


• Plan and perform routine, non-routine, and specialized optical imaging/sensing procedures on patients/biosamples.

• Conduct professional engineering and scientific work exploring and using biotechnology to enrich practices, techniques, and knowledge in the medical, physiological, and biological sciences.

• Enhance and ensure the health, safety, and welfare of living (i.e., human and animal) systems.

• Create and improve designs, instrumentation, materials, diagnostic and therapeutic devices, medical systems, and other devices (e.g., systems, equipment, application programs, and components) needed in the study and practice of medicine with living systems.

• Analyze and interpret all acquired data. Knowledge of coding languages, image analysis, word, excel, and statistical analysis software is required. Ability to learn new software programs and develop new analytic techniques required.

• Use techniques in accordance with established protocols and in coordination with physicians and researchers.

• Maintain accurate experimental records both in laboratory notebooks and digitally.

• Perform literature searches and remain current in the field.

• Communication of research:

o Prepare draft manuscripts for publication, and revise manuscripts as needed.

o Prepare and deliver periodic oral and written group meeting reports.

o Prepare posters for delivery at scientific meetings.

o Graphic design abilities useful for figure and graphical abstract production preferred.


Qualifications

1. A Ph.D. in optics, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and/or a related field awarded by start date.

2. Doctoral degree must have been received between February 2020 - February 2025


Preferable but not required:

  • Experience with neuroimaging system such as EEG and fNIRS
  • Experience with AR and VR
