The Office of Radiation Protection aims to minimize radiation exposure and reduce the release of radioactive materials into the air, ensuring public health. This position supports these goals by providing supervision to the ORP staff as a Radiation Health Physicist 4 in the Radioactive Air Emissions Section to ensure facilities meet State and Federal requirements for radioactive emissions. This role supports the DOH mission further by overseeing licensing, inspection, and investigations, focusing on the Hanford Site, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, fusion and fission facilities, radioactive material licensees, waste facilities, those needing a Title V Air Operating Permit, and oversight of radionuclide emissions from sites undergoing CERCLA cleanup actions.

The duty station for these Radiation Health Physicist 4 (RHP4) is in Richland, WA. There is a combination of in-office and telework currently expected. It is anticipated that the incumbent would be expected at theduty station for work activities for 4 to 6 days monthly. In addition to occasional visits to licensed facilities and Tumwater, WA.

Currently of the two roles being offered one is considered non-permanent with an anticipated end date of 6-12 months from hire date. As a result, this position is not eligible for a Department of Retirement Services benefit for the duration of the placement. Required Qualifications

Experience defined below may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities. Please ensure any relevant experience defined below is outlined in your cover letter, resume, and/or applicant profile.

A Bachelor of Science degree in physical science, engineering, or biological science AND five (5) years of professional experience in an official radiation control program or documented experience in radiation safety, radiation fundamentals, radiation measurements, AND application of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles and dosimetry.

AND

Experience

  • Two (2) years of experience leading, developing, or coordinating radioactive air emissions programs.
  • Two (2) or more years of lead or supervisory experience may include coaching, mentoring, training, and corrective action of multiple staff.
  • Experience will include practical skills in MS Excel for spreadsheet tasks, database management, MS Word for document creation and formatting, and Microsoft Outlook or similar email systems for electronic correspondence.
  • A Master of Science or higher degree in physical or biological science or engineering or a closely related field may substitute for two (2) years of professional experience.

NOTE: An official radiation control program is a radiation control program that is large enough to devote full-time staff to the review and control of the use of ionizing radiation with the intent of limiting and reducing human exposure to radiation.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience applying the principles and requirements of the national emissions standards for hazardous air pollutants for radionuclides (40 CFR Part 61) and Washington Administrative Code 246-247.
  • Experience with enforcing state and federal air emissions standards.
  • Experience with investigating radiation incidents or accidents.
  • Experience interpreting regulations and policies governing the use of radioactive materials.

Note: The Department of Energy will require a certification process to be conducted prior to access to certain facilities, applicants should be prepared to submit to this check to conduct elements of the work.

Conditions of Employment/Working Conditions

  • Participate in emergency response exercises and emergency events/high-priority assignments as assigned.
