Senior Director of Community Engagement

Position Overview

Under the direction of the Chief of Learning and Community Engagement, the Senior Director of Community Engagement will oversee and manage the following areas of work and individual functions: community partnerships and engagement, access programs, teen programs, equity programs, and audience development. They will collaborate with colleagues in Learning and Community Engagement and, across the Museum, around matters of equity and inclusion to ensure a welcoming visitor experience, drive forward IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and access) priorities through programming and partnerships, and help to foster a sense of belonging across the institution for all of Boston.

The Senior Director will represent the Museum with community partners, our philanthropic community, governance, external colleagues, and other constituents in meetings and conferences and provide professional services. This position will establish and maintain best practices to reach and retain new audiences for, with, and on behalf of the MFA and, when successful, will be extended to our colleagues in other institutions for whom this work is also critical, offering influence throughout the organization and the field as a whole. In addition, the Senior Director's work will support and influence the internal organizational culture for all employees in collaboration with the Senior Director of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access.

Ongoing success will be achieved when the Greater Boston community sees the MFA as a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible institution with dynamic programming in which they feel comfortable participating.

Primary Responsibilities And Duties

  • Oversee and provide direction for audience development, access, and teen programs.
  • Partner with colleagues across Learning and Community Engagement to enhance strategic equity programming and partnerships with community organizations, expanding reach into the community to listen, learn, and understand our city's ever-changing demographics and needs.
  • Transform our existing visitor base by creating a long-term plan to grow the diversity of those currently underrepresented in our visitor profile.
  • Act as a connector and thought partner with colleagues in various departments to align practices, protocols, and policies that directly impact the visitor experience, amplify opportunities for inclusivity and access to the Museum, and support staff in their development of inclusive programmatic planning and execution.
  • Hire, train, coach, mentor, and manage staff performance in Access, Teen Programs, and Audience Development.  Address and resolve performance-related issues as necessary.
  • Empower colleagues by developing training and promoting practices across the Museum focused on engaging with diverse audiences, working with youth, and evaluating programs, communication, outreach, and engagement to ensure that the Museum welcomes everyone.
  • Serve as the liaison for Learning and Community Engagement to assess the impact of Special Exhibitions on audience development.
  • Brief and advise senior staff as needed on matters related to equity, inclusion, access, and diversity with an impact on external and community relations matters.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • 7-10 plus years of professional experience in museums, cultural or community settings
  • Demonstrated background in education and the arts; diversity, equity, inclusion, and access; social justice; civil rights; social work; youth development; or other related fields.
  • Experience implementing successful engagement tactics with communities who have been excluded from the mainstream experience because of their race, religion, disability, language, gender identity, and /or ethnic origin 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with diverse communities
  • An inspirational leader with a demonstrated ability to motivate staff to thrive, meet communicated goals, and work collaboratively.
  • Evidenced strength in team building, group facilitation, and cross-sector collaboration
  • Proven track record of working successfully and collaboratively leading change within a complex, fast-paced environment
  • Experience and knowledge of Boston and the communities across the city
  • Exceptional administrative and project management abilities, including oversight of budgets, timelines, and staff 
  • Superior communication skills, written, verbal, and digital; ability to deliver compelling presentations to diverse audiences
  • Strong computer literary

Compensation Range And Schedule

  • Pay Range: $140,000 - $155,000/Annual
  • Full-Time Salary - 35 hours per week.

Please note that the advertised salary range is competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary offered to a final candidate in good faith will depend on various factors, such as experience, education, specialized training, unique, relevant skills and abilities, internal equity, and other individual experiences and qualifications.
