Chronicle Books seeks a talented and experienced editorial professional to join our Children’s Publishing Group in a role that will focus on licensing, franchise publishing, and novelty/board books. Depending on the candidate's experience, the role will be offered as either a Senior Editor or an Executive Editor. This role will be based in San Francisco, CA or New York, NY.


The Senior Editor will develop distinctive and profitable projects in key areas of the list, including board books, novelty formats, licensed titles, and series. They will collaborate with authors, agents, licensors, and in-house teams to guide projects through the publishing process. In addition, they will contribute to setting strategies for the children’s category while monitoring trends to determine the best publishing strategies for our audience. Mentoring junior editorial staff and managing direct reports effectively will also be part of this position.


The Executive Editor will lead the acquisition of 10-12 distinctive and profitable projects per season, including high-profile books and bestselling franchises. They will manage specific publishing categories and programs, enhancing commercial success and reputation. The Executive Editor will also grow and guide the careers of the editorial staff, fostering a healthy and innovative editorial community. Cultivating relationships with authors, artists, agents, and licensors to develop top-tier titles will also be part of this role as will working with the Publishing Director on list planning and team training to drive business and people success.

Requirements

The Senior Editor will need a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, and the Executive Editor will need a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience. Both positions will require applicants with strong self-motivation and an ability to work independently. They should have a keen interest in pop culture and licensors, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with attention to detail. Excellent communication and negotiation skills are required as well as a passion for innovative and profitable publishing.


Schedule and Work Location

Employees at Chronicle Books follow a flexible hybrid schedule of working a minimum of 3 days per week in our San Francisco office, depending on project and business needs. Employees in our NYC office work a hybrid schedule of a minimum of 2 days per week in the office.


Hiring Salary Range: Senior Editor - $78,000/yr - $89,700/yr. or Executive Editor - $94,000/yr - $112,800/yr. These ranges represent the anticipated low and high end of the expected salaries for these positions and will be determined by factors including but not limited to an applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and geographic location as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. This position is also eligible for our profit share plan.
