The Surgical Technologist works as part of the team that delivers surgical care in the operating room. The technologist possesses knowledge and skills in sterile and aseptic technique. The Surgical Technologist also demonstrates knowledge of numerous surgical procedures so the needs of the surgeon can be anticipated.
Essential Job Functions
Organizes and prepares case set-up prior to start of case. Identifies and communicates unusual techniques and instruments required for surgery.
Cleans, assembles, operates, and properly cares for instruments, supplies, and equipment used in team specialties. Demonstrates an understanding of surgical procedure classification system and handles operating room specimens according to standard operating procedures.
Provides patient care, according to diagnosis/procedure, utilizing the procedure cards and following established hospital policies and procedures. Documents procedure changes on procedure cards following each case according to standard operating procedures.
Identifies and communicates unusual techniques and instruments required for surgery.
Participates in measuring and monitoring Quality Indicators and outcomes.
Performs pain assessment and takes appropriate action according to standard operating procedure.
Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
