Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides one-to-one writing instruction to undergraduate and graduate students, following currently accepted writing center pedagogical practices. Departmental pedagogy does not simply emphasize writing skills or error-correction; instead, consultants emphasize the larger ideas in the paper, helping the writer discover what they wants to say and to say it clearly and persuasively. Consultants ask questions to get the writers thinking, to help them generate ideas or come up with a rhetorical strategy that will work for a given topic, audience or occasion. They help writers of all skill levels think more deeply about their writing, which helps those writers produce stronger, more nuanced, more effective work. Consultants emphasize the writing process; in other words, their goal is not to fix the paper, but rather to educate the writer so they can become a stronger writer and reviser in the future. Consultants do not edit papers; instead, they look for patterns of error and teach writers how to revise their own work.
  • Develops and teaches workshops and classes for WUSTL undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff and non-WUSTL students (ranging from grade school to college age). Other WUSTL departments and centers, as well as non-WUSTL educational organizations often request workshops. Consultants must be able to custom design an array of writing workshops, adapt them to a wide range of audiences and deliver them in an engaging and effective manner. This is essential to the effectiveness of a workshop, to the representation of the university and to the promotion of the department.
  • Assists in training, mentoring and supervising undergraduate peer tutors and graduate fellows working in The department. During evening and weekend hours, consultants take the lead in supervising all student tutors.
  • Record keeping, answering the telephone, handling walk-in traffic, making appointments, calling people on the waiting list.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
