The just-released 2023 Human Rights Campaign "Equality Rising: LGBTQ+ Workers and the Road Ahead" report highlights the state of the workplace for LGBTQ+ workers. Key findings: 💡84% of LGBTQ+ workers are out to at least one person in their current job-a substantial increase from 54% in 2018. 💡 Yet 51% of LGBTQ+ workers have withheld their identity at at least one job due to privacy concerns and 40% have done so due to fear of being stigmatized or facing violence on the job. 💡More than 25% of LGBTQ+ workers and more than a third of transgender and non-binary workers have left a job as a result of working in an environment that was not accepting of LGBTQ+ people. 💡In line with myriad previous studies, this new research finds that among LGBTQ+ employees, employees of color and transgender and non-binary employees continue to have worse outcomes on a broad range of workplace measures. The great news is that the "out at work" gap is rapidly narrowing, with similar outness at work levels across race/ethnicity. With the HRC declaring a National State of Emergency for LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. for the first time in history this year, we are at an inflection point for organizations prioritizing creating safety and inclusive cultures for 2SLGBTQPIA+ employees. Creating truly 2SLGBTQPIA+-inclusive cultures should be a priority for all organizations. The full report contains practical, evidence-based action items for employees and leaders at all levels. In today's climate, where LGBTQ+ individuals face challenges from various societal quarters, providing a safe and supportive work environment can have profoundly positive impacts, sometimes even life-saving. 📄 So what’s the business case? Consider this - a recent study shows that 28% of Gen Z identify as LGBTQ+. To attract and retain top talent from this generation, embracing LGBTQ+ inclusivity isn't optional; it's essential. This means promoting practices like pronoun respect, gender-neutral facilities, and inclusive policies covering parental leave and healthcare, including transition-related care. 🏢 A safe and welcoming workplace and beyond. Simply creating a safe, welcoming workplace for all is a significant achievement. Ensuring that everyone feels safe and seen during their working hours, regardless of their identity. When inclusivity becomes a workplace norm, it cascades into wider society, challenging and changing outdated attitudes and practices. Imagine if corporations refused to attend events in states with discriminatory laws against LGBTQ+ people (I’m looking at you, Florida). Such moves could catalyze significant legislative changes. Further studies have also shown that LGBTQ+ supportive policies can: - Increase job satisfaction: Employees are 56% less likely to leave their job if they feel their company supports LGBTQ+ policies (Human Rights Campaign, 2023). - Enhance creativity and innovation: According to Forbes, companies that support LGBTQ+ inclusivity report a 30% increase in creativity and innovation. - Increase health and reduce sickness/absence levels: Inclusive policies reduce health-related employee absences by 41% (McKinsey & Company, 2023). - Reduce discrimination at work: Workplaces with strong LGBTQ+ policies see a reduction in reported discrimination. - Increase your customer base and recruitment drive: Consumers and potential employees are more likely to support companies that advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusion. - Improve coworker relationships: Positive coworker relationships increase in inclusive environments. - Encourage greater disclosure in the workplace: There is a 25% increase in employees willing to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in inclusive workplaces (Harvard Business Review, 2023). LGBTQIA+ inclusive workplaces aim to make sure all employees feel safe and validated.
