DFS decided to close a major line of business in Singapore. My role as Regional Vice President of Finance was caught in the crossfire, the role was made redundant. At first, I felt mixed emotions—disappointment, loss, even fear! But as I processed everything, I felt a sense of calm and clarity. I knew my worth. This wasn't about me not being good enough; it was a bottom-line decision. That's when it hit me. After attaining the peak of my career, and making sacrifices along the way, I craved something more. I wanted to use my skills to make a real difference in people's lives, in a more human way. This realization, interestingly, led me to become a financial advisor (the profession that I hated previously). The journey wasn't easy, but I was determined to count on my “PNL”. I reached out to my Past network, Never stopped learning, and Leveraged my transferrable skills to grow as an independent financial advisory rep, helping individuals achieve their financial goals. When I recently shared my story at a webinar, where I was invited as the guest speaker, the response blew me away. So many people resonated with it! Three reasons you should start your career in Investment Banking rather than Google. These are all learnings I'm incredibly grateful for! 1) You learn to work hard You build a habit of working all waking hours. After that, working 9am - 9pm becomes easy. This sets you up to be able to pursue your dreams later. If you work at Google, you get used to working 10am - 4pm. Working hard to chase your dreams after that is a struggle. 2) You build confidence By working harder than you could have imagined, you build confidence. You push your boundaries of what you thought you could do. 3) You become grateful Every job you do after that will be less exhausting 🤣. For students interested in finance and banking careers. Today we're explaining 'Initial Public Offerings (IPOs)'... 1. What is an IPO? An Initial Public Offering (IPO) consists of 4 key elements: I. A private company II. Selling its shares to the public III. For the first time IV. To raise capital 2. What makes IPOs interesting? IPOs allow companies to raise significant capital to fund expansion, pay off debt, or invest in new projects. For investors, IPOs offer a chance to own a part of a growing company from the beginning of its public trading life. 3. What are some real-life examples? Famous examples include the IPOs of Facebook (now Meta) in 2012, Alibaba in 2014, and more recently, Airbnb in 2020. 4. What else is worth knowing? Investing in IPOs can be risky, as newly public companies might face volatility. Therefore, it's crucial to research the company's financial health, business model, and market potential before investing. My last semi-joke post had 8x more engagement than my normal posts, so, thank the algorithm, here's another one: I was a CTO once... almost twice, in fact. But imagine my surprise when I learned that having "CTO of a startup" in my CV didn't get me shortlisted for the CTO position at Singtel or Microsoft. I guess they're happy with Jorge Capelas Fernandes and Kevin Scott. Oh well, maybe they'll reach out to me in the future... And then there's my current position: Senior Lecturer. In some institutions that might be known as Assistant Professor. Or maybe not, who knows? Everywhere is a bit different. In a previous institution, I remember getting renamed from Research Associate to Senior Research Associate. Why? Because they wanted to do-away with the name "Research Assistant", all of whom were renamed to Research Associates. Did our responsibilities or pay change as a result? No, it was just a renaming exercise, that improved alignment with other institutions' naming conventions. So, should we care about job titles? On their own, no, because they tell us nothing. Tell me your title, what company you were at and its size/structure, and what your responsibilities actually were, and then I can make sense of what it is you can do. #jobtitle #cto #joke #commentary

What? 9 years!! As I saw this appear on my timeline this morning I was stunned. A whole 9 years, where does the time go?! It's hard to believe how far we've come since the day I ventured to London to join Reward. Leaving behind friends and family was a leap of faith, little did I know it would lead to a journey filled with ambition, innovation and endless opportunities. From day one, no two days have been the same! The ever-changing landscape of Fin-Tech, Loyalty, Customer Data & Analytics, Digital/Brand Marketing has more than kept me on my toes. I've had the privilege of working with some of the world's largest and most successful Banks and Retailers, not only in the UK but around the world. The exposure to such diverse projects in such challenging and changing landscapes has been a masterclass in adaptability and resilience. Beyond the obvious success and accomplishments, what truly makes this journey special are the people. I've made friends for life and had the privilege of leading and developing exceptionally talented individuals who make my job not just a responsibility, but a joy. I couldn't share this post without a shout out to my current team, they're the best in the business, but then I would say that 😉 I'm hugely proud of what we've built, what we deliver but most importantly, how we deliver.
