I enjoy reading reports such as the one published by Rimm Sustainability about sustainability adoption in #SMEs in the UK as they provide you with a glimpse into the messy reality of sustainability implementation in organizations. Furthermore, this report, featuring findings from a survey of 500 decision-makers at British SMEs, delves into the challenges faced by SMEs – a group that often doesn't receive sufficient attention in the context of sustainability.
There are plenty of interesting insights in the report (you can download it here - https://lnkd.in/d6F724Sw). IMO, the following 3 points are worth paying attention to:
1) Employees - "Employees are the top segments which SMEs in the UK communicate their sustainability commitments to" - more SMEs seem to communicate their sustainability work internally with employees (62%) in comparison with other communication channels such as an annual report (56%) or on their website and social media (56%).
As the report points this is an indication that "the employees segment constitutes a critical stakeholder group that is increasingly paying attention to companies that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability especially in the UK."
2) Challenges - commitments to sustainability are important but paying attention to challenges and obstacles (as well as enablers) is key as they eventually play a significant role in deciding whether to take action and to what extent. Here, the top challenges are the risk of disrupting operations (39%) and the risk of making a loss (37%). These risks can be addressed on an individual basis but it's more effective to address them on a systemic level, i.e. governmental interventions to significantly reduce these risks.
3) Community - replying to a question about the type of support they are interested in, 28% of the respondents from smaller SMEs said it is "the opportunity to be part of a sustainability #community." This makes so much sense and shouldn't be too difficult to execute, so how might this community be created?
