This weekend I visited the Turn It Up exhibition at the Science Museum Group with my little niece and was pleasantly surprised to find research by my former athletics coach, Prof Costas Karageorghis (Professor in Sports and Exercise Psychology at Brunel University London) on how different music genres influence driving performance. His work (using driving simulators) shows that slower music helps drivers stay calm and collected in stressful city environments. 🚗🎵 Another highlight was the AI Song Contest, where teams from around the world train algorithms to create music. The deep learning algorithm used is called a neural network, loosely based on how nerves connect in human brain. I wanted to share the project paper I co-authored with my colleague Burak Boğmak on the fascinating topic of "Musical Instrument Image Classification using Deep Learning" Our methodology involved multiple stages, starting with careful preprocessing of the image data, followed by feature extraction and classification using CNNs and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) models. To ensure our models were well-optimized and resistant to overfitting, we skillfully applied dropout regularization and early stopping techniques. By achieving these compelling results, our research aims to contribute significantly to the knowledge and understanding of deep learning techniques applied to musical instrument image classification. With practical applications in music education, image recognition, and virtual instrument simulations, this study opens up new avenues for enhancing accuracy and expanding the horizons of computer vision in the realm of music. Wrote an explanation of why GenAI does not understand anatomy, based on Luma AI's Dream Machine attempting to generate a video of a gymnast and Yann LeCun's response that video generation models do not understand physics. I also drew a comparison to when Stable Diffusion, Midjourney and DALL-E came out, with the monster hands debacle. But for image generation, this mostly seems fixed with more specific datasets. I'm curious how you would approach this issue for video generation. There is some mention of using 3D models, rather than just images, in datasets for image generation models. But is it viable? What are the complications when it comes to using models over images? How do you even go about doing that for video generation? 🎵 Exciting news at the intersection of music and artificial intelligence! 🚀 I'm thrilled to share a recent musical creation I developed using the generative AI platform, Udio. As a music producer with a deep technical understanding, I decided to explore the potential of AI in music composition. I used prompt engineering to create the music. How Does udio.com Work? Udio employs advanced neural networks that learn from a vast amount of musical data. When given a detailed prompt—which in my case included elements like musical genre, instrumentation, and even emotional nuances—the AI at Udio can generate compositions that reflect the given instructions. My Approach: For this particular track, I focused on creating an atmosphere that blends elements of progressive psytrance. With detailed prompts, I was able to guide the AI to produce the structure, melody, and harmony I had in mind. Why Does This Matter? The ability to use AI in music doesn't replace human creativity, but expands it! AI is Slowing Down! What does this mean? — Gary Marcus and Narrowing Status Games — Follow the Money Recent research has provided intriguing insights into how the brain functions with respect to electromagnetic waves and quantum physics, potentially contributing to our understanding of human consciousness and thought. Electromagnetic Waves and Brain Function Brain Wave Frequencies Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has revealed a universal pattern of brain wave frequencies across mammalian species. The study found that superficial layers of the cortex generate faster rhythms, such as gamma waves, while deeper cortical layers produce slower rhythms[1]. This pattern suggests a structured and hierarchical organization of brain wave activity that could be fundamental to brain function. Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) A study published in Nature investigated the effects of mobile phone electromagnetic fields on brain waves. Using a robust experimental design, the researchers found that EMF exposure resulted in a subtle increase in EEG power in the alpha band during eyes-open conditions[2]. This suggests that EMF can influence brain activity, although the exact implications for consciousness and cognitive function remain to be fully understood. EMF Theories of Consciousness Theories proposing that electromagnetic fields contribute to consciousness have been around for decades. These theories posit that the brain's electromagnetic field, generated by neuronal activity, integrates information and produces a unified conscious experience. Recent discussions have revisited these ideas, suggesting that early evidence against EMF's role in consciousness may have been misinterpreted[5]. This renewed interest highlights the potential for EMF to play a significant role in brain function and consciousness. Quantum Physics and Consciousness Quantum Computation in the Brain Researchers at Trinity College Dublin have proposed that the brain might use quantum computation. Their experiments indicated that brain processes could interact with nuclear spins, suggesting that these processes are quantum in nature. This quantum interaction was correlated with short-term memory performance and conscious awareness, implying that quantum processes might be integral to cognitive and conscious brain functions. Quantum Theories of Consciousness The Orch OR (Orchestrated Objective Reduction) theory, developed by Stuart Hameroff and Roger Penrose, posits that consciousness arises from quantum phenomena in the brain. This theory has gained some traction recently, with experimental evidence suggesting that quantum states can endure in the brain and that anesthetics impact these states[8].
