Happy July 4th! 🎉
Celebrating with my very star-themed swag collection from EOS and Desktop Metal ⭐️
It was wonderful to see many of you last week in LA for RAPID + TCT - a week full of connection, celebration and collaboration!
The week started with our EOS announcement up on the Nasdaq board, caried on with the spectacular AMT/AMV/Cantor reception, then a stellar performance by Robert Martinsen and Fred Carter at the TCT conference ✅
Celebration was the key theme for me, and it continues today with my very first 4th July holiday 🎆
I’ve now seen through two whole quarters at nLIGHT, Inc. and have only grown more and more grateful to have been given this opportunity to in some small way help shape this crazy industry.
Time to watch the fireworks! 🤩

📢 PSA for Additive Manufacturing community folks!
Formnext has officially launched the revamped Formnext awards and the time to apply is NOW!
This year I'm totally honored to be on the judging panel for the illustrious 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭-𝐮𝐩 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 and the brand-new 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐞 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 🌟 Winners get unrivalled publicity, 1:1 coaching, cash 🤑 and even the opportunity to exhibit at Formnext - that's unbelievable value for a young company.
Even before joining the judging panel I *always* made a point of attending PitchNext and strolling down the start-up aisle at Formnext, it's where the best companies in AM launch themselves 🚀
We want to leave no good idea or fantastic start-up stone left unturned this year, so get ✍ And if you know of a great company that might be eligible - give them a nudge! Sometimes it's all they need to give them the confidence to apply.
And there are also other new categories - namely the Sustainability award and the Ambassador award. Make it your mission to either apply, or tell someone else to, because there's something for everyone here!

Couldn’t have said it better myself 🌟
Controlling your beam more intelligently, and choosing the right beam profile for the right material and geometry is a game-changer!

U.S.-based maker of semiconductor fiber lasers nLIGHT, Inc. signed a Letter of Intent with laser powder bed fusion system manufacturer EOS to collaborate on beam shaping lasers for its metal LPBF systems. As Joris Peels reports, customers can access nLight lasers in #3Dprinters from EOS’s large-format LPBF subsidiary AMCM GmbH.
Kicking off RAPID + TCT with the executive panel this morning. All this talk of consolidation (that isn’t happening) is getting tiresome 🥱
So I did love it when Marie Langer said “I do not like that word ‘consolidation’, I prefer ‘smart partnerships’” 👏
Additive is an ecosystem - I don’t think consolidating balance sheets is going to get us to the next phase of growth. Let’s all think more about how smart partnerships can get us there instead 🤝 It’s much less distraction and much more about productive teams working together!

Guess who our special guests are at nLIGHT, Inc. today?
🐰 Bunny suits for all to get the behind-the-scenes tour of our chip production fab tour ⚛️
One of the coolest things about nLIGHT is that we are fully vertically integrated - we make everything from electrons from the wall to photons on a powder bed!

This is a big one ❇ The nLIGHT, Inc. and EOS will bring beam shaping to the whole EOS portfolio! https://lnkd.in/g2wRHzVX
It's been a total delight working with the EOS team and I'm so happy to finally share this publicly. This news comes hot off the heels of the TCT award that we just won with AMCM GmbH, an EOS Group company 🌟
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone next week at RAPID + TCT 🎉

We build winning partnerships at nLIGHT, Inc. 🌟
We applied for this award but it belongs every bit to the three other partners we nominated: AMCM GmbH, OPTOPRIM Germany GmbH, The Ohio State University.
The AMCM M290 FLX takes one of the most robust metal AM systems out there and combines it with the breathtaking speed and flexibility of nLIGHT AFX lasers ⚡ And now it's an award winning machine!
It's wonderful to get this recognition and even more wonderful to see the beam shaping community grow, with new customers coming online all the time.
Watch this space - we're just getting started! 🚀

Bringing a new technology to market is a *craft* and oh boy I learnt the hard way!
Understanding how an innovation finds it's way into mainstream use was a key learning for me, and really helped me refine my thinking and approach to the market - seek the people who will listen to your message and then understand what they need to convince them.
One thing I didn't mention here is that it was around this time (~2015) that I read Geoffrey Moore's book 'Crossing the Chasm', which describes the chasm between the early adopters and the early majority. This book takes the Diffusion of Innovations theory to the next level, and it has been instrumental to my understanding of how to do my job (and career!) better, leading to a lot less wasted effort in the wrong places 🌟
I would say that it's a coincidence that Geoffrey Moore is on the board at nLIGHT, Inc. but I like to think that the universe has a knack for bringing the right people together at the right time.
Yesterday I was honored to spend a whole day with Geoffrey, Bill Gossman and the nLIGHT leadership team, testing and mapping out our AM strategy. Geoffrey and Bill's insights and knowledge were outstanding and I'm so grateful they are there by our side as we work with innovative companies across the globe to bring beam shaping to the mainstream market 🚀

When selling innovative or disruptive tech, it's important to make sure your positioning and messaging is directed toward a demographic who is receptive to trying new things.
Some people or companies just aren't going to be interested because it's too risky, untested, etc.
This was the first time I had heard about the Diffusion of Innovations Theory and it has already helped me reframe how we may help some of our more bleeding-edge startup customers at Raconteur.
What's particularly interesting is that at first glance this applies only to the ethos of entire companies or industries.
For example: Dow or Dupont are older and larger companies so they would probably be part of the Early or Late Majority. They need tech that is more stable, tried and true.
But the theory could be applied to people within those companies.
Chances are that those large companies have individuals or departments that would be Innovators or Early Adopters and could help champion the technology to the rest of the company.
One of the other guests (Ben James #001) on the podcast talked about how finding the "innovator" in large companies was a good way to form partnerships as a young startup.
Have you experienced this? How do you position your marketing and messaging to be sure you're contacting the right people?
This is a clip from the Bold Visions Podcast with Alex Kingsbury

Great to visit Aconity3D GmbH today! Many thanks to Yves Hagedorn for showing us around their ultra impressive 2500 m2 purpose-built facility!
Aconity3d recently celebrated their tenth anniversary 🎉 From humble beginnings at Fraunhofer ILT with a mere 16 m2, Aconity are building a strong a viable business in innovative machine tools for additive manufacturing 💪
Let that sink in: 16 m2 ➡️ 2500 m2!
Aconity3d were one of the first to incorporate an nLIGHT, Inc. AFX laser into their system. From the get-go they have embraced innovation 🌟
And I think this goes to show that only with innovation can we continue to compete and succeed.
