Did you know that October is #GlobalDiversityAwarenessMonth? 🧡 We celebrate and embrace all the ways our different ethnicities, cultures, heritages, lived experiences, and abilities make up our Pamplin community! Meet Dr. Ngoc-Khanh Tran, an Assistant Professor of Finance. Tran also serves as the Co-Chair of Pamplin’s Community Committee, with a mission to be strategic and intentional about DEIB within the college. Global Diversity Awareness Month will also be a natural and concrete annual target and deadline for us to assess (and celebrate) our action plan and achievements on Diversity causes over the last 12 months. Every important and broad agenda, such as Diversity, needs a dedicated group to design and implement that agenda. DEIB is important because it is the group behind the Diversity Agenda. [Pamplin] needs a good (diverse) representation, and I am happy to represent the Finance department in DEIB.”

Shivam Dwivedi, was an Indo-German Centre for Sustainability (IGCS) grantee from the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Chennai, India. Shivam recently completed their research exchange program at RWTH Aachen University, and Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany under the mentorship of Prof. Olivier Guillon and Dr. Mariya E. Ivanova. Their research focuses on Proton Conducting Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells, exploring innovative solutions for storing #RenewableEnergy. Advisors offer personalized guidance, mentorship, and encouragement, empowering students to navigate challenges and make informed decisions. Academic advisors are advocates for students, championing their interests and ensuring they have access to resources and opportunities that align with their goals. They advocate for equitable policies, accommodations, and support services to create an inclusive student environment. Advisors provide holistic support, addressing students' social, emotional, and financial needs. They offer referrals to campus resources, assist with time management and study skills, and provide a supportive ear during challenging times. And perhaps most importantly, advisors provide accurate and up-to-date information, which is critical in academic advising. Advisors stay informed about curriculum changes, degree requirements, and university policies to provide students with accurate guidance and prevent misinformation.
