An interesting read with a hopeful note from Reuters: More #regenerativefarming practices could halve food system greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. There's also a clear call for partnership with both farmers and other organizations. As Milindi Sibomana, Chief Agriculture Officer at One Acre Fund, puts it: "Most of the farmers that we work with need to get a financial return in that particular season... For a short period of one to three years…” Our Nestlé Income Accelerator Program and other initiatives in various parts of the world, aim to incentivize farmers in adopting regenerative practices. These efforts can have a tremendous impact on farm resilience against extreme weather events, as regenerative agriculture has the potential to reduce water and chemical usage, prevent land degradation, and restore soil, water, biodiversity, and carbon on farms. Yesterday, we celebrated World Milk Day! With a picture of the main actors from a place I know well since childhood, I’d like to emphasize the vital role of dairy in delivering quality nutrition and share with you how we at Nestlé tackle dairy emissions. Dairy is an essential part of a balanced diet across the world and is used in our products. That’s why we’re putting effort into reducing greenhouse gas emissions from dairy farming. Emissions reductions in dairy ingredients have already contributed to 25% of all the reductions achieved by Nestlé since 2018. And we are scaling up: Through directly supporting farmers such as in Brazil with the “Nature por NINHO” program. Together with our suppliers, we are also supporting innovative on-farm tools that reduce greenhouse gases and plant native trees to sequester carbon and improve soil health. The Nestlé Institute of Agricultural Sciences is dedicated to finding scalable novel approaches to reduce emissions in areas like cow feed and manure management. I was thrilled to experience the achievement of our teams in the UK and Switzerland firsthand: They have successfully developed paper-based refill packs for our Nescafé Gold Blend! The launch builds upon Nescafé's earlier success of introducing recyclable in-store refill pouches in 2022. Happy Earth Day! Today, let's take a moment to appreciate the incredible power of #regenerativeagriculture. I truly believe that regenerative agriculture is vital to our work to do good for both people and the planet. That’s why it's at the heart of our net zero roadmap. We've seen the convincing results of regenerative agriculture firsthand, whether it's through our collaboration with Nestlé Purina and Cargill in the United States, or witnessing it in the Swiss fields just last week. The farmers who have embraced this journey would never want to going back to conventional methods like intensive tilling. They're making their farms future-proof, and we're proud to support them every step of the way. Regenerative agriculture also does so much more than just reduce greenhouse gas emissions (though that alone is enough to champion it). It enhances biodiversity, helps the soil retain moisture and nutrients, and has a remarkable impact on reducing air temperature. It's like a Swiss knife in #climateaction! After months of work, our Nestlé German teammates have launched #UnterwegsNachBesser. It is a large online video and out-of-home campaign that aims to bring to light how the making of our products can contribute to a positive difference for people and planet. The content highlights partnerships, online projects & stories, placing messages at the hub of activity (eg. central train stations), and initiating conversations on the streets with an eagerness for dialogue. Our German teams hope to garner awareness and understanding around our efforts to improve farmers’ and families’ livelihoods, lead packaging innovations, and minimize CO2 emissions. I am impressed by the passion of our teams and the compelling stories of the farmers and partners we work with. I hope that in sharing their voices, even more folks can discover the importance of advancing regenerative food systems and are encouraged to also take #ClimateAction. We took home five prestigious awards, including Second Runners Up – Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Award 2023, Top Ten Best Corporate Citizens, Sector Award – Manufacturing, and two awards for our consistent commitment and continuous improvement in environmental #sustainability. These recognitions are testaments to our global #climateaction efforts and the dedication of our teams on the ground to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient Sri Lanka. Well done all! 95.47% of Nestlé’s total packaging, and 83.5% of our plastic packaging is designed for recycling. This #WorldRecyclingDay, I want to highlight the importance of infrastructure in ensuring packaging materials can actually be recycled. We have partnered on 220 initiatives to develop well-functioning waste management systems across the countries in which we operate. In Latin America, we are a proud member of the Latitud R platform, which is promoting inclusive and circular economy throughout the region. More than 390,000 tons of recyclable materials have been collected between 2021 and 2023 in 13 countries, mostly by leveraging the networks of local waste pickers. Another great example of collaboration is in Brazil, where The Recicleiros Cidades project provides job training, promotes consumer recycling education, and implements waste collection infrastructure in 11 Brazilian states. As both Nestlé's Global Head of ESG and a mother, I’m deeply invested in our teams’ work towards a more sustainable future. Climate action is necessary to ensure our food systems are future-proofed for both us and our future generations.    Our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions is at the forefront of our efforts, with a 13% reduction in Nestle's emissions last year alone. The path ahead is ambitious - aiming for a 20% reduction by 2025 and net zero by 2050. But we're relentless, tapping into every opportunity to make a positive impact. From leveraging the power of regenerative agriculture to support farmers and the surrounding natural environment to driving packaging innovations with a circular mindset to striding toward 100% renewable electricity across all sites by 2025, our progress is a collective effort achieved by localizing global initiatives.    There are too many folks involved to name individually here, but, needless to say, positive impact takes a village.
