What a vision…
In 2004 our colleagues from Credit Suisse had the vision to Introduce the Credit Suisse Classic Car Program. For almost two decades, they built a network of friends and enthusiasts who shared a passion for classic cars. The partnership consisted of outstanding classic car events, which included its own rallies and its collection of historic vehicles. This year UBS is proud to continue this tradition and its commitment to the classic car scene by sponsoring the 14th Grand Prix de Monaco Historique and hosting the UBS Classic Car Rally. These two events bring classic car fans from all over the globe for an extraordinary springtime program on the Riviera. This past week I had the honor to host our Americas clients and friends in partnership with my global colleagues in an outstanding series of events. #shareUBS #UBSCraftmakers #UBS

Another big day for Oppenheimer & Co., the most client-centric, outcome-driven, intellectually adept and nimble firm that I have ever had the pleasure to call home. Proven. Resourceful. The Power of Oppenheimer Thinking is much more than a tagline. #OppenheimerandCo #wealthmanagement #capitalmarkets #investmentbanking #trustservices
What an exhilarating way to kick off the week: by ringing this morning's opening bell at the NYSE with my colleagues from Oppenheimer & Co. Inc.! The energy and enthusiasm on the floor were amazing, not only for this special moment, but for what lies ahead - and for what we are building, together. These colleagues - and so many others - fuel The Power of Oppenheimer Thinking, and their unwavering dedication and commitment to our firm and to its clients are an inspiration. It was truly a privilege to share this important moment with them. A special thanks to Chris Taylor and the entire NYSE team for hosting us for what was a memorable experience for all!

Bankers in 2021 were buying Ferrari's... 🚗 ...and now they barely afford the fuel. ⛽ Why? Its simple... the M&A market thought that 2021 was the beginning of the beginning. Big Bonuses... Big Holidays... A lot of Fun... ...And bigger budgets for next year! But this was not to last! In my opinion a lot of M&A from future years was brought forward due to companies trying to position themselves for the "new normal". They had to act quick and thus closed deals instantly. Limited Due Diligence? No problem, just give me the company! The market is all M&A'd out!

Yes, but can he hit the curve? In baseball as in all sports those who can ultimately separate themselves from those who can’t. There are a number of checks along the way from little league to the major leagues with one significant differentiator being the ability to hit a good curveball. A lot of guys can sit back in the batter’s box and lay in wait for a fastball out over the plate. But if you want to have a distinguished major league career, unless you pitch like Sandy Koufax or field like Ozzie Smith (you can look them up) you’re going to need to learn how to deal with a major league curveball. The workplace is the same way. Pretty easy to show up everyday and make your contribution when things are moving along as expected. Discipline and high quality work product can take a person a long way in the steady-as-she-goes environment. Certainly the paychecks should keep coming. But curveballs get thrown at work, too. Can you hit one? Or a series of them? My ex-colleagues at Citi Private Bank are having a lot of curveballs (and change-ups!) thrown at them every day. Those curveballs coming in the form of leadership changes at the same time the bank puts more focus on investments and investment advice and less emphasis on lending. As you may have read these curveballs include some pretty significant layoffs. And the bank may find itself shrinking the business before it can grow it. As I built my career, first in the building materials business and then in financial services, I always prided myself on being able to hit the curve. When there is a lot of stress in the business one can distinguish to the upside simply by showing up everyday with a positive attitude and getting the work done. Not being pollyannish necessarily but recognizing that the organization is moving in a different direction, embracing that new direction, and then helping the organization navigate its way to that place. Great reward (job security, respect, promotion, appreciation, compensation, etc.) can come to those on the right side of that equation. But it’s difficult and exhausting. I timed my exit from Citi with this last round of off-speed pitches. The bank had been so good to me over the years and I really loved our team but I also recognized that this round of change required a level of sustained energy and commitment I no longer was prepared (capable?) to deliver. So I gathered up my equipment, said some brief goodbyes (me famous for the French exit), and came home to spend more time with my bride. To my friends at the bank: now is the time to distinguish yourselves to the upside. The bank is looking for its next group of leaders. Our business is so much a people business and the bank needs you now more than ever. Great impact will be rewarded in multiple ways. Now is the time to dig in and drive that curveball all over the park.
