Excerpt from International Women’s Day breakfast Speech transcript delivered by the Hon Anthony Albanese MP | Prime Minister of Australia. “The lead-up to International Women’s Day is an opportunity for all of us to recognise the progress that women are driving across our economy and our society. It’s a chance to re-affirm our commitment to true gender equality – in the community, the boardroom, on the sporting field, in our parliaments. Above all, this is a time when we must face-up to where we are falling short and look for new ways to do better. Nowhere is this need for new thinking and renewed determination more urgent or more clear than when it comes to addressing violence against women and children. One death from family violence is one too many. One death a week is an epidemic. It is an offence against every value we hold as Australians, it flies in the face of everything we say and imagine about ourselves as nation. In acknowledging this hard truth, it is worth noting that there has been a profound change in the way we talk about family and domestic violence and the national priority we give to it. The terrible toll of violence against women is front page news – as it should be.” Further in our Prime Minister says: “When women are seeking help, they should be heard and seen, believed, supported, and empowered. A willingness to understand what a person has been through must be built-in into the system and shape the actions of everyone who works in it. As one woman put it: “Your whole world is turned upside down. Most days you don’t even know what your own name is. Let alone the right services to call.”… At Mary’s House Services we deal with traumatised and vulnerable women every day and recognise their need for an all-encompassing support system. We do not leave women to solve it on their own. Domestic violence services - Mary's House Services (maryshouse.org.au) #strongertogether #saynotodomesticandfamilyviolence

Women's rights ARE #HumanRights❗ On #HumanRightsDay we reflect on the last #16Days of activism against #GBV. We appreciate all your comments, engagement, and support. Germany advocates for the Feminist Policy, which in turn creates equality for marginalized communities and people. The idea that the presence of a strong and autonomous feminist movement can be a critical factor to drive policy change in ending violence against women and girls both in domestic and global policy making, shows us the benefits of including women in to all spheres of life. There is #NoExcuse for #GenderBasedViolence; join us in working together to bring this issue to light and push for #FeministForeignPolicyForChange❗ #FFP #EndGBV #FFPFC #GermanyinAfrica

The 19th Amendment was adopted on this day in 1920 so we recognize 103 years of women’s suffrage in the United States. Thank you to the pioneers who empowered women to make their voices heard! We also recognize we have a lot of work to do. Women past and present have worked tirelessly to ensure everyone has the freedom to vote and make their voices heard to achieve equality — including Indigenous women, Asian American women, Black women, disabled women, women serving overseas and beyond! What can you do to help? Advocate for law and policy change. Speak up where inequality exists. Support other women and their goals. Engage others, including men, into the conversation about equality. Learn more about challenges and opportunities for women from credible sources including the National Women's History Alliance (NWHA). #WomensEqualityDay

This article about the #AskHerToStand campaign provoked a really strong reaction in me this morning. We talk so much about the importance of #representation (in fact it's the first subject on our agenda this morning with a group for one of our fantastic clients), but ultimately, representation means nothing if there is not a safe environment surrounding those people, and an equality of voice within the organisation. The #covid inquiry referred to a "macho" culture, and women's voices not being heard in the rooms where key decisions were being made. So the internal cultures at play in Westminster will need to significantly shift to provide an environment where everyone can be heard and feel safe. And there needs to be mitigation of the external factors - with Amnesty International research from 2021 sharing that women in politics are more that 27 times as likely as their male counterparts to receive abuse online (with the abuse being even more frequent for women MPs who are people of colour), that's an incredible burden for anyone to carry, before they've even started a day's work. So I absolutely applaud this campaign, but please can we remember that whilst representation is enormously important, we will never see the full benefit of the richness difference brings if people aren't safe and supported with an equality of voice. https://lnkd.in/eiDsjcy9
