🌍 On Global Recycling Day, we're thrilled to be taking part in a podcast with SYNETIQ, focused on closing the loop in a UK EV battery supply chain. 🤝 It's an honour to have been invited by SYNETIQ to join this discussion, hosted by ATF Professional, shedding light on the important topic of recycling old EV batteries to provide sustainable, low-carbon battery materials right here in the UK. By doing so, we're not only reducing the need for extensive mining, but building industrial resiliance. 🇬🇧 SYNETIQ has emerged as a leader in sustainability within the evolving UK EV battery ecosystem. Their commitment to establishing a circular economy for batteries is evident, with pioneering initiatives like supplying old EV batteries for 2nd life storage, as well as recyclers to recover critical minerals for re-use in new batteries. In this new industry, they will play a pivotal role in safely and sustainably managing the supply of end-of-life EV batteries. 🧑🔬 At Altilum we're reclaiming critical minerals, including lithium from discarded EV batteries and transforming them into premium cathode active material (CAM) through our cutting-edge EcoCathode™ process. This not only significantly reduces carbon emissions by over 50% compared to virgin materials, but also could reduce CAM cost by up to 20%. ♻️ Our full battery circularity model is a unique UK customer offering, encompassing zero-carbon EV battery collection, black mass recycling and chemical refining to battery-ready CAM for direct reuse within the EV supply chain. Our upcoming Teesside plant, ACT 4, will handle battery waste from more than 150,000 EVs, fulfilling 20% of the UK's CAM requirements by 2030, positioning it as one of the largest projects in the region. 📹 Stay tuned for the podcast ahead, where we delve deeper into these crucial initiatives shaping the future of sustainable end-of-life EV battery management in the UK. #globalrecyclingday #innovation #circulareconomy #altiliumcleantechnology #sustainability #SYNETIQ

Marketing Manager at SER & Cellcycle | Public Speaker | Environmentalist | Sustainable ICT, WEEE & Battery Recycling in the UK
What are the UK's current lithium battery recycling capabilities? It's a question I hear often second only to, "Is your name short for Maxwell or Maximus?". So, what are the UK's capabilities in lithium battery recycling? The truth is, we're not quite there yet compared to other countries. Currently, the UK battery industry lacks any kind of commercial-scale refining capabilities. This means that battery recyclers, including Cellcycle, must rely on approved refining routes in Europe and beyond to fully recycle battery materials back to their original critical elements such as Nickel, Cobalt, and Lithium. So, what can we do here in the UK? Many established and emerging lithium battery recyclers can provide compliant logistics and collections, manual separation, with a few companies capable of shredding material or producing black mass and ultimately exportation of material for refining. But this isn't the end of the story. As technology advances and the industry evolves, it won’t be long until we have multiple complete and closed-loop recycling solutions right here in the UK. At Cellcycle, we’re striving to be part of that future! The point of this post is to highlight that while we’re not yet as developed as some other countries, we are on our way. Through innovation, dedication, and hard work, I believe the UK will soon be at the forefront of the battery recycling industry, leading the charge in both battery production and recycling.
