Do you remember the famous person who deciphered the Enigma code during World War II? His name is Alan Turing, "the father of modern computing." He was born in 1912, and was a British mathematician, logician, and cryptanalyst whose work laid the foundations for today's computers. His efforts during the war were crucial to the Allied victory. In 1936, Turing conceptualized the Turing machine, which provided a blueprint for the design of modern computers. In the later years of his career, Turing worked on mathematical biology. He developed a model explaining morphogenesis, the process by which patterns and structures are formed in a living organisms. He is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. Turing was born on June 23, 1912, which is today! His contributions to computer science include the Turing machine, which is a model of computation that is considered to be equivalent to a modern computer. He also made important contributions to the field of artificial intelligence by proposing the Turing test, which is a test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human. Turing also played a pivotal role in the Allied victory in World War II by breaking the Enigma code, which was used by the Germans to encrypt their military communications. Today we focus on Alan Turing and his contributions to the world of computer science. 👇👇👇 Alan Turing, a brilliant British mathematician and computer scientist, lived a life marked by both exceptional achievements and tragic circumstances. His pioneering work in the early 20th century laid the foundation for computer science as we know it today. Turing's name is often associated with the Turing machine, a theoretical model that became the basis for modern computing. During World War II, Turing played a crucial role in breaking the Enigma code used by Nazi Germany, a feat that is estimated to have shortened the war by years and saved countless lives. However, his contributions remained shrouded in secrecy for decades. Despite his remarkable intellect and groundbreaking work, Turing faced persecution in his personal life due to his homosexuality, which was criminalized in Britain at the time. He was subjected to chemical castration and endured immense personal hardships. Tragically, Turing's life was cut short when he died of cyanide poisoning in 1954, an apparent suicide. It was only many years later that his work and contributions to computer science were fully recognized and celebrated. Today, he is rightfully regarded as a pioneer in the field, but the world lost him too soon due to societal prejudices. Cognition and consciousness should be distinguished. Markov models simply increase prediction accuracy and fall under 'cognition'. Conventional computation will likely lead to a sort of pseudo-consciousness, much like computers can only ever produce pseudo-random variables - the machines might walk talk like conscious agents, but only in mimicry of training data from actual conscious agents: they'll exist as 'philosophical zombies'. The real money will be in the integration of quantum computing and AI models that account for a 'qualia sense' - i.e. internal states as sensory input as well as external stimulus. The conscious mind acts as both observer and observed - the cat in the box and one that opens it. The process of conscious thought is one of recursive decoherence, allowing for a sort of 'fuzzy free will'.
