For 30 years the top 3 fast food burger chains served exclusively Coca-Cola. In a 2021 blind taste test Pepsi discovered that 60% of people favored Pepsi over Coke when paired with fast food burgers. Naturally Pepsi couldn’t resist using this as ammunition against Coke. So with the help of an origami artist Pepsi released the “Better With Pepsi” campaign. Despite it being 2021, Pepsi’s plan was to launch this info in a series of print ads that also happened to coincide with National Burger day. To draw attention to the print ads, Pepsi hired an origami artist to cleverly fold the restaurant bags of Wendy’s, McDonalds and Burger King to reveal the Pepsi logo. On the day of the launch anyone who posted a picture of themselves drinking a Pepsi with a burger from Wendy’s, McDonalds or Burger King would get that drink for free. The combination of the print ads and the pictures of people eating burgers with a Pepsi generated 3.6 billion impressions and stole 1.1% of market share from Coke. This campaign is a prime example of social centric marketing, finding multiple creative ways, both on social and off to generate huge amounts of social media conversation.

No More Dry Burgers: McDonald’s Overhauls Its Biggest Item In the heated competition for hamburger dominance, the fast-food chain has spent seven years making over its signature offering Earlier this year, McDonald’s came in 13th among U.S. chains based on the number of recent customers calling their burgers desirable, with only 28% of respondents saying they crave them, according to a survey of about 49,000 consumers by market research firm Technomic. White Castle led the list with 72%, and Burger King followed at 52%.

Recently read a book that shared In-N-Out Burger is more profitable than McDonalds… that’s crazy since In-N-Out has 400 burger joints and a small menu yet McDonalds has thousands of stores with a huge menu. We don’t have an In-N-Out Burger in our state so I’ve never had the experience. Yesterday driving thru Denver we finally went…. I had my “small business hat” on and just watched and watched as we ordered and waited. I spotted the 3 differentiators right away. 1. Every young person behind the counter gave you eye contact, smiled and loudly asked how they could help. 2. The efficiencies of food making was obvious: the same two young people did fries all night long. The same three burger makers kept making burgers… efficiencies matter and getting good at one thing so you can do it well and fast is key. 3. They were fair and organized. Although we came in when they were calling number 73.. we were 90 and no one got served out of order like a lot of other fast food places. Everyone waiting for food was so patient because they trusted the system and knew their number order was being respected. So as I was reflecting… what differentiates our business? What differentiates your business? How will your attention to detail help you beat out your competitors and deliver excellent service not sub par service? With over 4 million possible Chipotle Mexican Grill combinations, the chances of someone ordering the exact same burrito bowl as you at the exact same time are slim. But during Chipotle's Doppelgänger Campaign, whenever an identical order with at least 8 menu customizations came through (chicken and rice burritos didn't make the cut), Chipotle-goers got an email alert letting them where in the world their doppelgänger ordered from. Chipotle's email campaign led to a click rate 176% above benchmark in the first four weeks and $4.8M in revenue. Creepy? Ingenious?
