Opportunities have been close but have been pushed back annoyingly. Here’s my current situation: 🔺Close but Delayed: Several roles have been nearly within reach, only to be delayed due to budget issues or contract delays. 🔺Quiet Market: Agents have shared that the market has been unusually quiet. 🔺Economic Growth Not Felt: The reported 0.6% growth in the UK economy hasn’t translated into tangible opportunities for me. I’m staying positive and exploring volunteer opportunities while waiting to hear back on several options. Dear professional network – I’m looking for some advice and possible opportunities. I’ve been out of work for a few months now after finishing my previous contract. I’ve put in dozens of applications with not even a bite. It can be pretty demoralising to spend a couple of hours on an application and it just disappears into a black hole never to be seen again – most employers don’t even notify unsuccessful applicants! The government has reduced the use of contractors and bolstered the APS and with the increased post-COVID WFH and remote working opportunities, the competition from interstate has increased. This has all contributed to a difficult environment to find work. I’ve never had problems getting a job, so this is a bit new to me. So far, my strategy has been to look for contracts working with a small number of employment agents and through Seek, I haven’t really looked at permanent roles up to this stage. I’ve been working at a senior level and delivered some large projects, so I’m looking for roles that are commensurate with my skills and experience. Jumping into the APS does not feel like a good fit, because I would need to get in at a Director level, which is highly contended and seems mostly have succession plans in place for those positions (but I could be wrong). Thanks to all the recruiters that have reached out because of the “Open to Work” green circle. One of the issues I am finding is that all recruiters seem to have access to the same opportunities and it’s not always clear because they’re all presented differently. Open to Work (and getting out of my own way). I’ve talked myself out of adding that ‘Open to Work’ frame on my LinkedIn profile countless times since being made redundant in December, because in my head I’ve felt that the frame denotes desperation, of being less than, of being a failure. I hated the idea that people I’ve worked with and know might think less of me, so I kept the ‘open to work’ visible only to recruiters, which in retrospect is akin to hiding in the shadows of LinkedIn. What’s insane is that by overthinking it, I've been missing out on hundreds of people that I’ve worked with throughout my career, who might be looking for someone like me (or know someone who does), and yet that shame of needing help sat there in my mind, gnawing away. Yet, it’s actually me getting in my own way, worrying about the perception of others, rather than owning it and embracing the benefits it can bring. I’m no marketeer, but the starting point to any good campaign is to tell people that your product is available! Am looking for my next role - gotta keep the cat 🐱 fed! In all seriousness - some of you may know that my business partner & I stepped away from full-time roles last year to search for and acquire SMEs. We're still incredibly bullish on this (having learnt a brilliant amount in the journey), but personal runways are draining. I'm looking at you, tripling mortgage rates! We'll continue that journey but in a very different form with a different set of heuristics (happy to jam with you if you're interested in hearing more about that). Meanwhile, I'm looking for a new role - open to both full-time and project-contracts. I enjoy and am good at solving complex messy problems across multiple functions, and have a couple of areas that I'm interested in exploring now: - Business transformation / innovation roles in non-tech companies - Corporate Venture Capital / Venture Builders If you know of any exciting opportunities in these areas, I'd greatly appreciate referrals or introductions. I’m hearing from many past colleagues impacted by position cuts and office closures over the last few days. Having recently moved on from a long-term company relationship, I want to share what I learned with those of you affected. First off, take a deep breath. You’re going to be okay. While it’s impossible to believe it right now, there’s a really good chance your next opportunity will be even better. Second, your job and this event don’t define you. Sure, you may have committed many years to your company, but it’s not who you are. If it was, then maybe this is a good thing in disguise. Third, while extremely personal to you, it probably wasn’t personal. Businesses make tough decisions, and clearly this was an event not targeted at you. The sooner you believe that, the faster you can get on with it. Lastly, leverage your network. You probably built a good one along the way, so use it. Be grateful, not embarrassed or timid. Recruiting tech will flood you with jobs to look at, but my best opportunities started with a good word from people who know what I can do, and were willing to share. Side note: Those of you who really know me know I’m not one to broadcast unsolicited advice. Today I put myself out there a little further hoping it helps some really great people.

I see many people seeking jobs as they were terminated by their companies in the difficult times. In order to get employed again please note the below points and work for better future. 1. Learn niche tech and develop some projects and showcase them in your portfolio/blog sites. Take time and work hard, but don't remain silent about your work, advertise about it in social media for better reach. This is super important. Choose a tech stack - could be web, mobile, cloud, or whatever you are passionate about. Without this, I think it is very difficult to attract future employers these days. 2. Don't go overboard in abusing the earlier employer or the managers. Companies will have their own reasons. Life is full of up and downs. Running a company is not a cakewalk. Companies get cornered sometimes with finance crunch and laying off becomes inevitable sometimes and some of them unfortunately might fail to give correct reasons for layoff. This is all out of our control. The fact is that we are fired and now need to be in search of new opportunity. 3. Be positive and have a growth mindset. Never hesitate to seek help from family circles, friend circles, and. wider community.
