I was skimming through the MIT Technology Review on the prospects of AI in Core Manufacturing and here are some of the key takeaways. . . . The core manufacturing industry is a term used to describe the eight sectors that have a significant impact on the overall economic and industrial activities of a country. They are also called the core sectors because they represent the capital base of the economy and influence the performance of other industries. Here are the salient points addressed in the report: 1. AI systems are being utilized to create and simulate digital twins of machines like windmills to help generate relevant data for analytics that would improve efficiency, sustainability and Return on Investment. 2. AI is going to shrink factories but not jobs. In fact, “Human talent is at a premium right now, so everybody, every organization that I speak to right now, they’re all focused on cutting cost, not jobs,” says Ritu Jyoti, global AI research lead at market-intelligence firm IDC. 3. To remain competitive, core manufacturing industries will need to integrate AI into their existing systems. The benefits of doing so are manyfold: including but not limited to easier maintenance, scrap reduction, increased yield and a better understanding of demand and supply. The manufacturing industry generates unfathomable volumes of data about diverse modalities every minute. This is the reason why ‘companies are encouraged to tame their data, foster talent and AI-related skills, and allow workers on the ground to communicate the best ways to use AI’ — Hi, I'm om varshney, and I've dedicated myself to exploring and sharing the latest insights about AI. If you're interested in the AI landscape, please feel free to ask me for more insightful discussions. 📖 Adopting AI in manufacturing at speed and scale | McKinsey -By Henry Bristol, Enno de Boer, Dinu de Kroon, Rahul Shahani, and Federico Torti The McKinsey article "Adopting AI at Speed and Scale" makes a compelling case for why manufacturers can't afford to ignore AI any longer. Here's what stood out: ➸ Proven ROI: AI isn't just a buzzword. "Lighthouse" factories – early adopters of AI – are seeing major performance gains, from increased productivity and quality to reduced costs. This isn't theoretical; it's happening now. ➸ More Than Just Efficiency: While AI can definitely optimize existing processes, it's also unlocking new growth opportunities. Think predictive maintenance preventing costly downtime, or AI-powered design tools creating innovative products. ➸ The "Scaling Slump": The challenge isn't just finding AI use cases; it's scaling them across your operations. This is where many companies stumble, but the article offers strategies to overcome this hurdle. For Operations Managers New to AI: ➸ Start with the Problem: Don't get caught up in the tech. Focus on your biggest operational pain points. Could AI help solve them? ➸ Look for Quick Wins: Start small with pilot projects that can demonstrate value quickly. This will help build internal momentum for larger AI initiatives. ➸ Don't Go It Alone: Partner with AI experts, whether internal or external. You don't need to become a data scientist overnight, but you do need to understand the potential (and limitations) of AI. #FourthIndustrialRevolution #4IR #artificialintelligence ClearObject#machineintelligence #AI #manufacturing #generativeai #visionai #data https://lnkd.in/gv-gFymJ
