As the hallways of the NeoCon are again bustling, its important to remember that we all play a roll in the performance of a buildings materials. I start off every class with the statement " Flooring is not designed, engineered or manufactured to fail, however, we often fail the flooring by either putting it in an impossible situation or having inadequate maintenance.... "The Ramifications of Specifications". Here is an article I wrote with Stanley Hulin a few years ago!

A brilliant insight into the development of Minerva House and some of the challenges in the circular economy we're overcoming. Discover how we're retaining 70% of the building and leveraging the Thames to recover end-of-life materials, such as glass, and recycle these materials for future building projects. Watch the full thing below👇
🆕 GLASS FOREVER CASE STUDY VIDEO! With the continued growth of the Glass Forever programme in the London Demolition Sector, we’re excited to share our latest story on what has been a very special and unique project for glass recovery. Originally built in 1983, Minerva House is an iconic yellow-brick building, situated on the South Bank of the River Thames, which GPE is currently retro-fitting with partners Morrisroe Demolition Limited Our own Richard Calcutt has been working closely with Daniel Pitkin, Paul Moody and Lawrence Tate to implement a successful glass recovery model, including the innovative use of the River Thames to transport the cullet off-site. Dan Pitkin, Project Manager, GPE “Minerva House is our latest best-in-class, riverside office development. To reduce the embodied carbon impact, our retrofit strategy aims to maintain as much of the existing structure and façade as possible. The Morrisroe team have risen to the challenge of reusing as many of the deconstructed materials as possible, including recovering glass for the Glass Forever programme and transporting it from the site utilising our river logistics strategy. This demonstrates the Minerva project team’s commitment to finding an innovative solutions-based approach.” Check out the full case study on our website – https://lnkd.in/ebkTXCRs #Sustainability #GlassForever #InnovativeSolutions #CircularEconomy #MinervaHouse #GPE #Morrisroe #SaintGobainGlass

Reducing concrete maintenance from the start. As an architect, you don't want to specify a system that isn't a long-term solution. So if the asset owner reviews the concrete later, the system that's been specified should have reduced the need for regular maintenance. But what system is effective for that length of time? And is it simple enough to specify and be assured of the result? Have a look at using the INFRA-TECT system! It's what we used at the extension of The Glen car park, in Melbourne. Look through if you are in or around Glen Waverley. Check out the case study here: https://bit.ly/3FjU7YL

Is there a benefit to refitting versus a new build? According to Barry Doyle, Managing Director at Scollard Doyle, there is a small benefit although there is an expectation for it to be cheaper and that in fact, their studies show that refitting is only 10 to 15 % cheaper than a new build. The reason for the differential is the retention of the building's original frames and substructures combined with meeting modern requirements driving the prices back up- making refitting not always more viable as new builds. #buildingindustry

We had the incredible opportunity to speak with Andrew Parsons, the founder of the ATW Group, the parent company of Sapphire Balconies and MyDek. During our conversation, Parsons emphasized the importance of early engagement within the construction industry. One key aspect that Andrew highlighted is the need for manufacturers, including balcony manufacturers, to be involved in the early stages of a project. By having early engagement, these manufacturers can ensure proper connection and integration of their products into the overall construction process. This early involvement allows for better collaboration and coordination between all parties involved. Furthermore, Andrew pointed out that the earlier that all parties on the external facade connect, the smoother the entire construction process will be. When there is early engagement, trade-offs can be managed more effectively, and potential issues can be addressed before they become major roadblocks. This ultimately leads to a more streamlined and efficient construction process. Father and son... We love a feel-good story and embracing family values. In this one, Miranda Glass lives on in Greater Glass since 2017. There's sentimental appreciation when wisdom and experience pass from one generation to the next. This moment perfectly showcases the generational experience and expertise that Greater Glass is built upon. #glaziers #glassinstallation #builders #construction #propertymaintenance

smart work better than hard work
I'm thrilled to share the progress of our field installation process with our Infinite Facade! Witnessing how quickly we enclose buildings is always a remarkable experience. I am also proud to witness the completion of the first project I worked on since joining our preconstruction and sales. It has been an incredible journey, and we couldn't have achieved this without the exceptional design team at Dreyfuss + Blackford Architecture and our exceptional internal management team. Together, we are bringing the Sutter Roseville MOB to life! Stay tuned for more updates. We can't wait to see the final results.
