Thanks to the cooperation of Santa Clara County residents and partnership with County officials, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has lifted the Oriental fruit fly quarantine in the area. Although this is great news, the state is still at risk of invasive species infestations. You can help protect California’s fruits and vegetables by inspecting your garden for signs of invasive pests or diseases and reporting any findings to the CDFA at 1-800-491-1899. Learn more about invasive pests and diseases at: CAFruitFly.com and ag.santaclaracounty.gov.

Have you heard of the bird flu outbreak affecting cows in the United States? This article from Farmers Weekly discusses new research suggesting that the milking process could facilitate the spread of bird flu among dairy cows in the US. This transmission may be occurring via contaminated milking equipment and farmworker clothing. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) emphasised the importance of improved biosecurity measures on farms to control the spread. This includes examining the potential for the virus to be carried on clothing or in the milking equipment, directly contacting the cows. There's also an ongoing investigation into other potential transmission routes, such as the transportation of animals between states. The public health risk is considered low, and there's no concern about the virus contaminating commercial milk due to stringent pasteurisation processes. Biosecurity refers to strategies and management practices that lessen biological risk. On a ruminant farm, attention to biosecurity is the most important measure to reduce and prevent the introduction of diseases or pests of animals and plants. Biosecurity practices also minimize the spread of diseases or pests within a farm system. #Ruminants

Dividing a farm into biosecurity zones can help protect the areas of the farm most at risk from the impacts of pests, weeds and diseases. Zones can include: ➡️ An access “cool” zone with biosecurity measures such as a biosecurity sign and visitor register in place ➡️ A separation “warm” zone between access points and production areas with biosecurity measures such as restricted vehicle access ➡️ A production “hot” zone where livestock are present, and access is restricted For more information on biosecurity zoning: https://bit.ly/3R8p74W

Monitoring the health of your grain crops is essential for effective biosecurity, giving you the best chance to detect new pests or diseases early. Keeping detailed records, such as using a pest surveillance record sheet, not only strengthens farm biosecurity but also supports the overall biosecurity of the Australian grains industry. REPORTING PRIORITY INVASIVE AND MIGRATORY INSECTS — Do you spend time monitoring, photographing or observing insects? If so, your help is needed to watch for and report invasive and migratory insect pests that harm plants, causing damage to Canada’s environment, farm lands, forests, parks and other natural areas. Early detection is critical for slowing the spread of these insect pests. View the poster for your region to learn more about priority insect pests to watch out for. Use the QR code to report your detections! Download the poster for your region at this link: https://lnkd.in/eu5HkWk2 This initiative is a collaborative project developed by the Insect Surveillance Community of Practice of the Canadian Plant Health Council, a multi-partner body that coordinates action for the protection of plant health in Canada.
