Oak Ridge National Laboratory is partnering with sustainable battery recycling company Nth Cycle to develop methods for #recycling the type of lithium batteries that power electric vehicles, cell phones and laptops. ORNL researchers are evaluating the performance of battery materials produced by Nth Cycle’s electroextraction technology to inform process advancement. This technology is based on the removal of charged particles from spent electrodes and selectively separating metal hydroxides for reuse in new electrodes. At the Battery Manufacturing Facility at ORNL, the extracted metal hydroxide is incorporated into new battery cathode materials, which undergo testing to demonstrate properties on par with batteries made from pristine materials. This research is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO).

Ruhul Amin and his team Oak Ridge National Laboratory are working with industry partner Austin Elements to develop a process for separating and #recycling electrolyte components from used lithium-ion #batteries like those used in #electricvehicles, converting environmentally hazardous materials into value-added products. As part of the project, which is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO), researchers will also evaluate the electrochemistry of the recycled components and scale up the recycling process from laboratory to pilot level.

Updated software improves slicing for large-format #3Dprinting ⤵ Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed an innovative additive manufacturing slicing computer application. The technology can help widen the use of #3Dprinting for larger objects made from metallic and composite materials. Objects the size of a house and beyond are possible, such as land and aquatic vehicles and aerospace applications that include parts for reusable space vehicles! https://lnkd.in/e4W3J_dX
