25 years ago, armed with only a huge fringe and bags of youthful enthusiasm(!), I worked in Luton as a Community Media Manager on a Home Office Active Community Unit project called Luton Lives. The purpose of the project was to support disadvantaged communities through social action and the development of (what was then, very fledgling) digital skills. One of the initiatives we helped to set up was a Restricted Service Licence (RSL) radio station called Diverse FM, which broadcast a range of programmes to the local (and wider) area and was run entirely by a team of enthusiastic volunteers. Those early years were very basic, with the station operating from tiny rooms behind shops and some truly awful carpet stuck to the walls to deaden the sound! However, the passionate commitment to community action and improving life chances for all was there from day one. It was an absolute honour to be invited back last week to the station's studios on Castle Street to contribute to a film celebrating 25 years of this inspiring initiative. Wonderful to reconnect with some familiar faces and share our recollections (and some photos!) of those pioneering early days. The station now operates on a permanent licence and the studios are as professional and impressive as anything you will see in industry. What hasn't changed, however is the commitment to both supporting the local community and giving young people the chance to develop their digital and vocational skills. I was filmed and interviewed by some of these young people, and, although it made me feel unbelievably ancient(!!!) I would not have missed it for the world. Thank you Diverse FM for having me back - the work you are all still doing is incredible. I look forward to further celebrations later in the year and here's to the next 25...! 😊 Ashuk Ahmed Shohir Uddin Beth Follini Mary Palmer Business in the Community CSV Media Luton Borough Council

You had the fringe, I had some hairs and it was the perfect fit to kickstart diversity, inclusion and community cohesion in Luton with leadership from Beth Follini the legend. Lovely to see some old friends again.

I can't believe it's been 25 years since Luton Lives and Diverse FM! What a great team, what great work we did!
