FACT: The US would likely lose a conventional war with China. The US cannot win a nuclear war with China. Even if the US could neutralise 80% of China's nuclear capability (a big if), China could still lob a hundred nuclear warheads onto the continental US, destroying dozens of US cities, killing tens of millions of Americans, and creating radioactive wasteland that stretches all across the country. If the US considers this a victory, it can have it.

Iranians vote for change. Cautious optimism for Iran. Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian elected as Iran's new president, defeating conservative rival Saeed Jalili with 53.3% of the vote. Supporters celebrate in Tehran and other cities. Pezeshkian promises unity, end to isolation, and constructive negotiations on nuclear deal. Jalili, known for anti-Western stance, loses with 44.3% of the vote. Turnout increases to 50% in runoff election, with discontent leading to boycotts in first round. Concerns over Jalili's presidency prompt some to vote for Pezeshkian in the second round. Additionally, they were concerned about his hardline stance on domestic issues. Many believed that his presidency would lead to increased repression and crackdowns on dissent within the country plus increasing international isolation. Overall, there was a sense of fear and uncertainty about the direction Iran would take under Jalili’s leadership. Watch this space!

North Korea has announced that it will suspend sending trash-carrying balloons into South Korea, following South Korea's vow of strong retaliation against North Korea's recent provocative activities. South Korea is considering restarting loudspeaker broadcasts into North Korea in response. North Korea has stated that if South Korea resumes sending anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets via balloons, they will resume their balloon activities. The recent tension between the two countries includes North Korea's balloon campaign, GPS signal jamming, and simulation of nuclear strikes. Experts believe North Korea's actions are meant to create internal divisions in South Korea and increase tension ahead of the U.S. presidential election. North Korea has been increasing weapons tests in order to build a larger nuclear arsenal. #AsiaRisk #NorthKorea #Japan Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gwGAiz7h

The entire Sahel region in Africa has now become pro-Russia, with the last country in the region, Niger, falling under military control. This marks yet another geopolitical victory for Putin in Central and Western Africa. The Sahel region has enormous potential for renewable energy and is home to some of the largest aquifers on the continent. It is also one of the richest regions in the world, with abundant human, cultural, and natural resources. The region is critical for minerals, including uranium, and Niger plays a significant role in uranium production. This development may lead to further energy crises for the EU. France will be impacted more this time. It is yet another blunder in geo-politics.

#Russia blocked a #US- and #Japan-sponsored draft resolution that would have urged against developing #nuclear #weapons or other types of #WMDs specifically designed to be placed in orbit after its amendment was rejected, a Sputnik correspondent reported. Thirteen #UNSC members voted in favor, while China abstained. Prior to the vote, #Russia and #China proposed an amendment that would have extended the ban to include the placement of any type of weapons in space rather than just nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction. The amendment failed in a 7-7 vote with one member abstaining. Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzia said earlier this month that the UN Security Council is not the right body to adopt resolutions on outer space activities that affect all UN members. He said that the US and Japan were seeking to politicize the matter and use the draft resolution to promote "groundless" allegations about Russia aiming to deploy nuclear weapons in space. At the same time, the US is refusing to take any obligations not to develop other types of weapons specifically designed to be placed in outer space, Nebenzia stressed.

China has engaged in a coordinated disinformation campaign to fuel public anger in China towards Japan over the release of treated wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean. The key aspects of this campaign include: 1. State media outlets and government officials have repeatedly questioned the scientific basis for the water release, despite approval from the UN's nuclear watchdog IAEA. They have accused Japan of endangering the region and treating the ocean as a "private sewer".[1][3] 2. Misleading videos and false information have circulated widely on Chinese social media, such as claims of mass protests in Japan, sea life dying on beaches, and a Japanese official who drank treated water dying (which is false).[1] 3. Chinese state media has run paid advertisements on Facebook and Instagram in multiple languages without disclaimers, exaggerating the risks of the wastewater release. This has intensified public outcry against Japan.[1][3] 4. The disinformation campaign has tapped into existing anti-Japanese sentiment in China stemming from historical tensions, fueling panic buying of salt, radiation fears, and calls for boycotts of Japanese products and businesses.[1][3][4] 5. Analysts suggest the campaign aims to position China as an "alternate leader" challenging the US-led world order, and to undermine Japan's alliance with the US.[3] The disinformation has led to incidents like rocks being thrown at Japanese schools in China, abusive calls to Japanese businesses, and prompted Japan to warn its citizens about speaking Japanese loudly in public in China.[1][3][4] It has strained China-Japan relations further and could have broader geopolitical implications.[1] Citations: [1] https://lnkd.in/gUT4NDGy [2] https://lnkd.in/g69y3tmy [3] https://lnkd.in/g9RXtiUz [4] https://lnkd.in/gDxvxuQy [5] https://lnkd.in/gXAjPYny
