TECH JOURNEY :: DAY 29 Adina's Journey to Success! Once upon a time, there was a woman named Adina Friedman. She started at the very bottom of a big company called Nasdaq, working hard as an intern. She dreamed big, but being a CEO seemed like a faraway star. One day, Adina got a chance to talk about her amazing journey. She said, "I never thought about being a CEO all the time. I focused on doing my best at every step. When the CEO role came, I was ready!" Being a CEO brought a lot of attention because Adina was a woman. But she didn't let that distract her. She said, "My job is to make Nasdaq successful, no matter if I'm a man or a woman." When Adina was young, she went to a school where only girls studied. That's where she found her voice. In college, she saw that not all girls spoke up. But Adina did, and it made her strong. Adina faced challenges, especially from people who didn't value her voice as much as a man's. She said, "I learned to focus on my goals. Don't let others' problems stop you from reaching your dreams." Being a CEO is tough. Adina deals with a lot every day. But she never forgets her goal. She said, "Take stock of your life. Focus on moving forward, even if it's hard." Looking back, Adina wished she knew something sooner. She wished someone told her that being a working mom is okay. "You can have balance and a great career," she said. So, Adina's story teaches us to dream big, find our voice, and never give up. Yesterday I met a few of my friends for a drink after work. In addition to their day jobs, one has been advising a startup for the past year, and another is contemplating building her own brand. I've also been running Pathio alongside my full-time role. What really struck me in the conversation was our intentions behind pursuing these projects. Our intentions aren't to transition out of our current roles or to create billion-dollar ventures (well, that would be nice 😄) More than anything else, it was an effort to increase fulfilment, creativity and adventure in our lives. The work ebbs and flows, we have good and bad times, in both day jobs and side hustles. Having a second project almost acts as a buffer on your overall wellbeing. It creates another source of fulfilment aside your day job, and vice versa. The following comments made me think it's healthier to have a side project than not: "I don't think I would've gotten through last year at work if I wasn't doing this on the side." "It really helps me focus my creativity on something else, where I have full control." "I feel like it makes me more creative and confident at work." This makes me wonder what employers think. Could side projects help employees be more creative, fulfilled, and potentially stay longer in their current positions? Also, is it inappropriate to post wine-related content here? 😅

Gosh, it's been a minute. This time last year, I dove full-time into fractional work. Hands down, opening up Just Words was the best professional decision I've made in recent memory. It's pushed me to think about the strategic role content plays at companies in exciting new ways, and opened the door to a host of gratifying collaborations. As I often tell my clients: All content is context-dependent. What looks great in a doc doesn't always translate on web or mobile. Helping founders and teams find the best way to tell their story and scale content operations is rarely a straight-forward path. I still deal with the grief of selling my company, and it’s been 3 years. One of my teammates recently shared her heartfelt words with me about the bonds she built at Chewse. My knee-jerk reaction was shame and sadness. This post is raw, but I write it because I know so many founders who exit and struggle with the grief of the ending. In the final weeks of selling my company, COVID-19 rocked the world. So when we finally wrapped the deal, I couldn’t even hug my team goodbye. And while pre-COVID many of them were going to be hired by the new company, with the pandemic we had to fire everyone. It was a quiet ending that I grappled with deeply for years. Why? I still feel the leader’s responsibility for my team. Even though they are all capable, wonderful humans who have moved on with their lives and jobs. But as I sit with the sadness, something beautiful has begun to emerge. It’s a sense of how Chewse was a blessing in people’s lives. A lesson we all learned from. Some may not have liked their time there, while many built deep relationships from it. It’s similar to truly accepting a compliment. Can I let it sink in how special of a culture we created at Chewse?
