Another Minneapolis company with innovation at its core is 3M. 3M owns a variety of brands, serving both consumers and businesses. 3M owns Post-it, as well as Scotch. Interestingly, 3M acquired Kinetic Concepts Inc. (“KCI”) several years ago. KCI was founded in San Antonio more than forty years ago. It produces medical technology related to wounds and wound healing. It produced the first product developed specifically for negative pressure wound therapy. When most San Antonians ask where my office is located, I tell them it is in the old KCI building. 3M’s acquisition of KCI illustrates how brands can grow their reputation and goodwill through acquisitions.  Investors may find 3M interesting because of its stature as a dividend king. Dividend kings are stocks that have increased their dividends every year for at least fifty years in a row. Out of the four thousand-plus public companies in the United States, only fifty are dividend kings in 2023. 3M has increased its dividend every year for sixty-six years.  Do you find Post-it products, Scotch products, or dividend kings more interesting?

Following the merger between consumer electronics leader BenQ and Siemens Mobile Division (MD), a new era of products emerged requiring a unified branding approach under the banner of BenQ–Siemens. This strategic move seamlessly integrated the esteemed reputations and brand marks of both entities. The task at hand was to craft a new brand identity that captured BenQ's reputation for premium quality while also setting a new standard for sophistication. It was imperative that the co-branded identity encapsulated Siemens MD's renowned German precision and design excellence, alongside BenQ's ethos of blending lifestyle with cutting-edge technology. The redesigned branding achieved a balance by subtly blending the distinctive features of BenQ and Siemens into a cohesive whole, symbolising the seamless integration of their operations. The iconic square design associated with Siemens and the rounded aesthetics of BenQ were merged to form what was coined the "squound" symbol. This visual element instantly communicates the unity of the two brands. Drawing inspiration from the intricate patterns of butterflies, the brand identity incorporated BenQ's signature pattern-based elements. This strategic approach ensured consistency and instant recognition across various touchpoints, further reinforcing the unified brand narrative. Private equity interest in flexible packaging and label companies continues to surge... making it a seller's market for owners contemplating selling their businesses. With small and midsize packaging companies becoming prime targets, the industry is witnessing a flurry of mergers and acquisitions, with 30 M&A deals recorded in Q1 alone, as reported by Packaging Dive. It’s not slowing down. The interest, that is, of private equity (PE) groups in flexible packaging and label companies. Thinking of selling your company? Owners of packaging companies are the big winners in this seller’s market. Remember when news of Smurfit Kappa and WestRock merger made headlines last fall? Well, small and midsize packaging companies are the targets of private equity. So far in Q1, there have been 30 M&As to date, according to Packaging Dive. M&A activity in 2024 should be at least as vigorous as it was in 2023, says Peter  Schaefer of New Directions Partners.  The strategy begins with acquiring one company as a “platform” then adding other companies until economies of scale are achieved, Schaefer explains in an article for Packaging Impressions.
