I was recently asked in a Panel about my thoughts on balancing #innovation with the cost of #AI.
💡 My opinion – First and foremost: Be aware of the cost of ‘free’.
If you’re using the free version of any AI tool, understand that the tool is using you as much. These things require an insane amount of training data – and have used up all the publicly available free data on the net. So when you use a free LLM, It is getting trained via your interactions with it. Nothing you write there is confidential – so be careful and strip your prompts and documents of things like Personally Identifiable Information, or intellectual property that’s not public.
Once you are on a private, paid plan, either personal or through your work, here are my three ways to assess value/potential ROI for an AI Project:
✔️ Step 1: Choose high impact use cases. Consider – will a talking head AI avatar bring additional value to you courses, or an AI feedback activity to personalize your Cyber security training? Would you rather invest in an image generator, or a 24/7 available performance coach?
✔️ Step 2: Choose a solution that can iterate and scale with you as well as the technology. Things are changing fast - pick a solution that is relatively agile even if it has some nuts and bolts showing. You don’t want to be tied to a solution that will be obsolete by the time it launches.
✔️ Step 3: The biggest change in the last year has been the democratization of AI technology. Anyone (well, not anyone) can build an AI-powered app. DIY is a serious possibility. Before you hitch your wagon to a fancy, high-end provider, explore if there are ways you can build part of the solution yourself.
💡 Of course, I might be biased towards #AIReady – our ground-level plugin that allows Learning teams to build their own, fully custom AI solutions at a fraction of the cost. I’d be curious to hear what you think about balancing innovation with budget.
