Greetings from our interns at the Bee Ridge Water Reclamation Facility in Sarasota, Florida! They have been on site this summer learning about new water treatment methods, safety, and building relationships. "Learning about the membrane basin on our job has been interesting since it is fairly new, and Bee Ridge has the largest in Florida." – Luke Natali, The University of Kansas "Take things slow and remember safety first. Whether it's proper PPE or shoring for a trench, taking time to slow down and think about what you are doing is critical for a safe jobsite." – Chris Atkins, University of Central Florida "The most valuable thing I've learned is the importance of asking questions because that is the best way to learn." – Ezichiel Yao, North Carolina State University

Kyle Thome, a student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, is spending the summer in Maryland and Virginia learning about Garney's most important value—safety. As a Safety Intern, he has learned what it takes to build a culture of excellence and has worked alongside the crew to get things done. "I've learned that every crew and job is different and having 'soft skills' is one of the most important strengths for a safety professional. My favorite thing to do while at work is to jump in, help the laborers, and learn how the work gets done. I will continue to learn from the experiences of other employee-owners and what I can do to improve company safety."

Over the past month, he's been busy in Kansas City crunching numbers and assisting the accounting team with daily tasks, such as handling customer and A/P invoices and bank reconciliation. "The sheer amount of different costs associated with each job and phase has been the most interesting thing I've learned. This experience at Garney is perfect for my career goals because I've always wanted to work in the accounting and financial side of the construction industry."
