Our second day at London Climate Action Week focused on representation in the carbon industry, circularity in fashion, sustainable farming practices, raising capital for nature-based investments, and exploring UK-specific climate solutions. Seagrass and Women In Carbon began the day by co-hosting a networking breakfast to bring together and empower women working in the carbon industry. Speakers included Jacqueline Isabelle Hadasch, Global Lead, Carbon Mitigation Strategy, Climate & Sustainability, E.ON and Meghan Edge, Head of Carbon Investments, Ripple. The Business of Fashion hosted an intimate roundtable on how the industry can accelerate the transition to a circular economy. Bridging the gap between ambition and action, this event united industry leaders, entrepreneurs and investors and focused on how fashion organisations can mobilise more capital and foster more cross-sector collaboration for their sustainability efforts. The event was moderated by Sarah Kent, Chief Sustainability Correspondent, The Business of Fashion, and speakers included Peter Majeranowski, Founder & CEO, Circ Earth; Baroness Kingsmill CBE, Board and Sustainability Lead, Inditex, and Dounia Wone, Chief Impact Officer, Vestiaire Collective. Goals House then hosted a panel discussion on sustainable farming practices, entitled “it’s not the cow, but the how; the essential role of livestock in regenerative food systems.” As well as discussing the merits of a plant-based diets, the panel explored the essential role livestock play in regenerative food systems, given farm animals are responsible for restoring biodiversity and enhancing soil health. Speakers included Patrick Holden, Welsh farmer and CEO, Sustainable Food Trust, Camilla Fayed, Founder, Farmacy; George Lamb, Co-Founder, Wildfarmed and Aadith Moorthy, Founder & CEO, Boomitra and 2023 The Earthshot Prize winner. The Sustainable Markets Initiative then hosted a panel reception on how we can unlock nature’s untapped economic power, featuring Ron O’Hanley, CEO, State Street, Charlie Nunn, CEO, Lloyds Banking Group, Laura Barlow, Group Head of Sustainability, Barclays and Robert Spencer, Global Head of ESG Advisory Services, AECOM. This event shined a spotlight not only on the urgent need to mobilise more capital, but on the role that nature can play as a profitable financial instrument. Closing out the second day, Seagrass hosted a dinner to explore the climate finance solutions and carbon policy frameworks needed in the UK to encourage private sector investment in decarbonisation projects. Hosted by Thomas Birr, Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer, E.ON and Ely Sandler, Policy Advisor, Seagrass and Fellow, Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University, the event featured remarks from Ian Corfield, Senior Business Advisor, The Labour Party and special guest Rt Hon Sir Alok Sharma KCMG, COP26 - UN Climate Change Conference President.
