Youth4Climate Flagship Event 2023: Sparking Solutions October 17 – 19, 2023 Youth4Climate Solutions Y4C and its partners launched a Call for Solutions in October 2022 that closed in March 2023. Structured as an innovation challenge, this first Y4C Call for Solutions aims to support the work of young people and youth-led or youth-focused organizations in four thematic areas: Climate Education, Energy, Food and Agriculture, and Urban Sustainability. From among 1,100+ proposals received, 100 projects from 63 countries have been shortlisted and invited to attend the Youth4Climate: Sparking Solutions Flagship Event in Rome on 17-19 October 2023. Winners, announced at the event, will receive up to USD 20,000 in financial awards, peer-to-peer networking, as well as learning offers graciously supported by partner organizations. #Youth4Climate #SparklingSolutions https://lnkd.in/deWdM_gk

Young people are willing to play a key role in addressing the climate crisis: they are keen on communicating about it, and on participating in demonstrations. But what can we do to help them play an active role?  We believe what they need is a tangible support to take action and to be able to become activists, gathering their impressive amount of energy and will to have an impact, providing them with the most useful #tools and the #bestpractices.🧑🧑 🪧 This is why the EYESYOUTHCLIMATE - EYES Youth for Climate Change was born.🇪🇺 Co-funded by the European Union, this Erasmus Plus project’s path is following 4 steps: 🌍🌡️a Training format, which comprehends a methodology and a framework for #YouthEngagement in urban marginalized areas, followed by  🌍🌡️a Training format on the job, a real EYES pilot test, which will lead to 🌍🌡️EYES Urban labs, to verify the competences that were acquired and to engage young people in facing climate change, so that everything will be ready to get to   🌍🌡️EYES demonstrative environmental run by the young people involved in the project within December 2024 Would you like to have more information? The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy in the US, a project funded by the European Union 🇪🇺 in the United States, celebrates the remarkable commitment of American cities to ambitious climate actions. In the 2023 cycle, 64 cities in the United States received a total of 109 new badges, showcasing their progress and achievements in implementing their climate commitments. Notably, City of North Miami and City of Tampa (FL), @Belfast (ME), and Greensboro (NC) reported for the first time, taking a significant step in their climate journey. The GCoM’s badge system, structured around Mitigation, Adaptation, and Energy Access and Poverty, captures the comprehensive efforts of cities through various phases, from commitment to diagnosis, target-setting, and planning. This system not only acknowledges the cities’ accomplishments but also facilitates connections with opportunities, resources, and peer cities at similar stages. In 2023, American cities earned badges distributed as follows: 15 in Mitigation, 33 in Adaptation, and 51 in Energy Access and Poverty. Impressively, ten new cities earned the Compliance badge, meeting all requirements of the Mitigation and Adaptation pillars: City of Aspen (CO), City of Columbia, Missouri (MO), City of Durham (NH), City of Fort Collins (CO), Mid-America Regional Council, Milwaukee (WI), Nashville (TN), City of Oakland (CA), City of Oxford, Ohio (OH), and City of San Rafael (CA). These achievements underscore the leadership of American cities in local climate action. Of the 192 cities committed to the GCoM in the U.S., 69 have earned the compliance badge, representing 36% of signatory cities. This leadership is highlighted by the fact that the overall average of compliant cities across the GCoM alliance is 9%, showcasing the U.S. average as four times higher. ‘We Can, We Are’ I have taken many things from today’s #DCUClimate2024 Conference and some of the thoughts forming in my own mind are: - the communication on #climatechange is often negative, and psychologically it takes 6 positives to equate to 1 negative so this narrative is getting us down. There is hope, power and opportunity and we can overcome climate change challenges. As a #species we have and are overcoming a #globalpandemic, we can and have overcome other challenges. - we are in a position of privilege. We, as a species have been ‘successful’ because of our ability to collaborate. We can collaborate in this global world, more easily than ever, for positive change and our technology should enable us do this faster. - we in Ireland are lucky: will have rain, and more rain, but others elsewhere in the world will have no food, no water, no ability to adapt. We got the opportunity to industrialize and we have jobs, education and opportunity to adjust. Many of us are in a position to help others. - does the message need to be ‘we can’, we are’ with examples near & far, that are making a difference; examples of role models and positive paths to empower and encourage rather that scare & discourage? - we are afraid of what we can’t see….we are afraid of the dark, the unknown, the future. We need a reminder and a vision of how good things can be. Immersion back in #Nature will help us to appreciate what we have. Go spend time outside; wonder at nature. We need positive visions of the future. Our creative community can help us imagine this. It was encouraging to present to Core Cities UK Mayors, Leaders and CEOs this morning, outlining the collective international work Core Cities has progressed in 2023. They know that our cities are inherently international, and that the links we have around the world are extensive. And they have seen the value of working together to strengthen them. The reach of UK Core Cities is huge - 104 formal city partnerships around the world; >20% of our citizens born abroad; pretty much one internationally marketed festival taking place in UK cities each week of the year; 15 world class universities with 164k international students ... these links are live, they're personal, they're global, and they're growing. Other countries are recognising the value of cities' global connections more than we can see here - in 2023 we saw the first Cities Summit of the Americas part-funded by the US State Dept, and the first COP Presidency / Bloomberg Local Climate Action Summit as a formal part of COP28. We're increasingly engaging with our national government to show the breadth and strength of cities' work abroad, and will continue to do this into 2024! 🇪🇺After the “CSI-ESG/CSRD for Cities Launch 2024”, held on March 19th and 20th in Brussels, the final report ‘Social Impact for Climate Justice’ has been published. This report offers cities and regions new avenues for collaboration between the public, private and civic sectors. Given the many intertwined crises humanity and the planet are facing, vulnerable communities require support and these new frameworks may contribute to such an effort.
