I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Associate Director, On Aging Institute at American Society on Aging!

Applied research makes me think of a good love story, something along the lines of “When Harry Met Sally.” Imagine the researcher (played by Billy Crystal) and aging service provider (played by Meg Ryan) engaging in a dance of back-and-forth collaboration. We all know what’s coming, the sparks that fly when they finally come together. These connections are what make everything better. Sure, it may get messy and confusing at times, but that’s where the magic happens. So, if you are a PACE provider, a health policy researcher, or someone in between, the magic of applied research in aging can find you, too. The latest Generations Journal highlights just that. Kudos to our editors Bonnie Ewald and Claire K. Serving on the Shepherd's Center of America's board has been a joy. A large part of our efforts has been a rebranding initiative and I am thrilled to share we are now proudly know as Aging Forward. Our mission remains the same: to provide a continuum of enriching services rooted in our shared goal to support older adults in living and aging with vitality. We hope to grow our network of community based organizations, that have already collectively served over 70,000 older adults, offered lifelong learning opportunities to over 289,000, and includes over 8,000 volunteers! There has been a great deal to read on the new CMS minimum staffing requirements that were shared in April. A large part of this conversation centers around the portion where regulation now requires for an RN to be onsite 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and available to provide direct resident care. The 24/7 RN onsite can be the Director of Nursing (DON); however, the RN must be available to provide direct resident care. The for-profit LTC industry quickly responded with condemnation, siting costs and staffing challenges. H.J.Res.139 has now been introduced to not only stop these rules from going into effect but would also stop any future regulations be implemented. I find this disappointing but not surprising. I stand with the National Consumer Voice in disagreeing with this overreach and hope that congress will support nursing home residents, their families, and nursing home workers that all believe these rule changes will result in better care for everyone. I will do my part by lifting up organizations and programs that support direct care workers and the communities that are getting it right. ASA RISE Fellows will improve well-being across an increasingly diverse aging population by improving policies and programs at the local, state and national levels.
