During the years I heard a lot of e-commerce guys say "We don't need SEO, we use Google Ads. It's an engine we can control. It's profitable so why bother." Today chinese ecommerce dragon Temu has DESTROYED Google Ads for many categories of products. I have heard as much as 40% increase in Google Ads click prices because of the chinese dragon. Which of course means many companies can't make a profit and stop advertising. Some even go bankrupt. SEO is not without competition or unfair changes, but never have we experienced anything as brutal as what just happened to Google Ads.
Skipping seo efforts in ecommerce is like peeing in your pants to keep you warm. In addition to the fact that modern seo takes into account the user journey and thereby also includes CRO, which will of course change the marginal cost of your Google ads in a positive direction, it is also my experience that seo is one of the marketing efforts with the highest profit over time - also in ecommerce!
The issue here is not only Temu or Shein, but the whole competitive situation has changed. In paid (buttom funnel) media the competition is much more fierce and even brandname categories are experiencing significant impressionshares from competitors. We need to think differently - growth must come in other (Owned and earned) platforms.
It's interesting one company can make such a huge difference that affects so many companies. I wonder how much money they have poured in to Google Ads! None the less, Temu has successfully (from a business perspective) lured people in and kept them in their with insane usage of gamification, urgency and scarcity in their app. Quite remarkable.
Hvordan ville du takle seo for ecom?
Besides SEO, companies also need to focus on their existing base. If you pay attention to your customers and send them offers based on their purchase history, you can increase revenue without using Google Ads. You basically cut out the middle man.
